I’m not saying they should have created a new younger guy to take over as Iron Man, but I do think it would have been slightly more successful than Teen Tony.

That’s a good point, but what they neglected to realize is that Kyle Rayner was a brand new character. I don’t think people wanted 30 years of comics history washed away so Marvel could redevelop the same person…they wanted a new character.

Well, we TRY to pretend it doesn’t exist….sadly, the scars run deep.

There are so many reasons why Teen Tony wouldn’t work, but of all of them I don’t like the idea that Tony Stark, one of the most experienced heroes in the MU was now a green recruit again. It wiped out all the relationships he’d built up over 30 years of comics. Ugh.

I agree that there’s some interesting ideas in The Crossing and it comes close to being a great crossover. I love your idea of splitting the evil Tony into his own body! That would have been a great resolution! Going and getting Teen Tony was never going to work as well as they wanted it to.

Weren’t we all pretending The Crossing never happened at this point?

I’ll buy it! Look, we all sometimes have to do some mental canon-ing to rescue characters we love. Any character that’s been published for that many decades is bound to have some cringey stories in their history.

Fabian Nicieza is one of my favorite writers and his New Warriors remains one of my favorite series of the 90’s. I did not care for Speedball in his early appearances…Nicieza made him such a joy to read, even if sometimes that joy was covering up Speedball’s own pain.
