Happy Mardi Gras, y'all! 🎭

My happy moment of the day was making a king cake.

What brought you joy today? Really, I want to know because not everyday can/has to be a dumpster fire, am I right??

Bragging moment... I love that some of my students are hardcore fake organizing for a mock committee hearing happening tomorrow in my Urban Tech & Planning Institutions class. / cc @columbiagsapp.bsky.social

At the same time, I'm so disappointed by the Fox graphics package. While I (honestly) appreciate Cletus the Robot, it reverts back to the Rex colors and oft-used filigrees and fleurs.

New Orleans (and La) has so much to draw from--food, music, art... Heck, give me beignets & gators twerking.

This part of Orwell's 1984 seems apt.

In other words, regarding good work, the wholesale pause on Federal grants and loans is impacting a wide range of good work, from disaster mitigation to pothole filling to research on new medicines and technologies.

More chaos due to policy by fiat.

I'm guessing they just trained the model on the open internet like everyone else, which infers greater access to corpora, then applied a blacklist to it.

While folks post about Tiananmen Square 1989, I asked about Winnie the Pooh and got the traditional answer...

Any other folks in Morningside Heights worried that the mistake is because "Columbia" is being drafted on some other press release? 👀

Are "photo dumps" a thing on here? Professional update: It's been a whirlwind of activity on my end of things. Over the past few weeks, I've been honored to present my work at the UNGA Science Summit, the People's Committee of HCMC, and GSAPP. Thanks for the opps and honored to share. 🙏

Well, NYPD is back at Columbia today.

Congratulations to the Columbia GSAPP class of 2024.

In addition to their class day festivities, the Urban Planning cohort organized their own program ceremony to celebrate their accomplishments and reaffirm their commitment to justice (and each other) in light of the violence on campus.

Is it appropriate to give a standing applause to whoever wrote the bottom audience comment at this #INGSA2024 plenary on expanded evidence in science policy? Someone even +1'ed it! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

One hour in and this plenary discusses the importance of lived experiences informing science and data. My students know my firm belief in that. Thank you, Prof. Morenza for pointing to science examples that valorizes that stance. #ingsa2024

As I look up at the drones and electronic surveillance equipment that have emerged since the arrests on campus, I voice my concern about what is happening at #Columbia against our own students. A statement from Columbia GSAPP faculty.

Well, I didn't think "earthquake" was going to be checked off my "Living in New York" bingo card. I hope everyone's alright and your home is safe.

Initial reports of the epicenter. Looking forward to learning more about this...

The calm before the storm. Thank you for having me, @responsivecities_iaac. Presenting the early work on embodied data from my soon-to-be-named and yet-to-be-formed lab en la mañana.

Now, the calm before the storm...

Happening now (and via YouTube) at GSAPP is a discussion on the (im)migrant challenges in New York and cities in the US. We can agree politics creates a domestic humanitarian tragedy, but where do we go from here?

Even if you're not in NY, I recommend watching at www.youtube.com/live/WCssNe6....

In a morning, really lucky to have Dan O'Brien from Northeastern and Lyndsey Rolheiser from York U to share their thoughts on research. I've been fortunate to learn so much from both of them, and jazzed to see them share their wisdom to my GSAPP students now <3

A view of the protests on campus at Columbia. From afar, it sounded like one unified gathering, with cheers from one side and song from the other.

The algos are showing me trailers, and here I am wondering what the heck is going on with this set for Frasier.

By the mismatched computers, I assume this is a uni, so what is going on with the office desk in the classroom? Why? That many pencils? Where are the piles of unread journal articles?
