Methane possesses a climate warming / greenhouse effect and is a strong contributor to global warming. Some studies estimate that ~30 % of the current increase in global temperatures is due to anthropogenic methane. 

FACT: Methane has a relatively short atmospheric lifespan: ~7 to 12 years before it is oxidized (converted) into CO₂ and water, it traps much more heat than CO₂ does (especially in the short term). Over a 20-year horizon, it’s warming potential relative to CO₂ can be ~80 to 86 times stronger. 

Old, inactive oil and gas wells emitting almost 7 times more methane than official estimates.

Because CH4 is so potent (albeit short-lived) reducing methane emissions is one of the most effective short-term strategies to slow the rate of global warming quickly. Significant cuts now would have a rapid and noticeable impact on reducing near-term warming! #onit #climateaction #doingourpart
