So often comic analysis falls into a really negative space which I avoid, I really appreciate hearing from professionals who really understand and appreciate the level of work and talent that goes into what they’re reading! They can engage on a deep level noting the skills that go into what makes a comic so good or what aspects of it could use some polish!! They’re great at appreciating a works strengths while also providing critiques that don’t fall into unnecessary spirals of negativity. I love listening to their reviews of what I’ve already read to get their insight, and appreciate their reviews on what I haven’t as good recommendations for my next read! Check them out if you’re looking for a nice space to hear about what makes both western comics and manga so great!!" "Critical Darling This podcast is a wonderful gem. I love the variety of genres covered & the depth of the discussions around the intersection of art & storytelling. I especially like the intertextual moments that happen naturally as they reflect back on past episodes & contrast the many comics they’ve covered so far. I’ve enjoyed episodes covering novels I’ve read just as much as episodes on works I’ve never heard of before. My one critique is on critique – from listening to any episode it’s immediately clear how much respect reverence the hosts have for the medium the artists they’re covering. They don’t need to defend their critiques or apologize for sounding overly critical. The critique is what we’re here for! I know the pieces of media I complain about most passionately are the ones I deeply like wish were even better. I hope the hosts can be less hard on themselves because they clearly understand how to structure a fun, constructive conversation are doing a really good job."
