Petrol and diesel both have fuel duty at 52.95p per litre - due to rise next year by 5p and then in line with inflation every year - and VAT is charged on top of this as well as well as on the rest of the price for the fuel. So it’s quite a bit more than 3p per mile.

Apparently his mother did it

Same one that led to Tescos, Aldis, and Lidls?

7x(100+6+10-1)-6=799

You want to get on to your MP. It’s ridiculous that the police are just shrugging their shoulders because it’s too hard.

Nice deflection

That’s not a denial bab

To be fair, the enzymes in pineapple basically eat you back when you eat pineapple - might as well get them to eat your ass.
November 27, 2025 at 7:27 PM
Pineapple in the arse? Filthy bugger.

The police are absolutely useless. They will actively dissuade you from reporting crimes they don’t see as being serious because they don’t want the extra work, to the point that they’ll try and make you feel guilty for reporting it in the first place.

I do have some sympathy for people who would struggle with moving for health reasons, but ultimately that’s reality. Sooner or later they’re going to have to sell the house to pay for care anyway. Might as well downsize to something affordable and enjoy the equity - have a few nice holidays etc.
November 27, 2025 at 3:26 PM
Why are you having to chase Evri yourself? The seller is the one who has the contract with them. It’s their responsibility to make sure you get what you ordered 😭
November 27, 2025 at 2:57 PM
How difficult are you going to be? 🤭

I’m not referring to software systems. The point is that it’s not a novel idea but one that works in real life applications.
And if public sector incompetence / corruption is a reason not to do this then it’s a reason not to do anything new at all.

Not enough to make a significant difference though. The rate is set based on what will be collected anyway, so the rest of us will effectively be subsidising the non-payers.
November 27, 2025 at 1:08 PM
And yet millions of people have been submitting manual meter readings to utility companies for years without any large scale disasters, despite the odd fuck-up here and there.
The common sense solution would be to collect it via a third party anyway as is done with VAT.
November 27, 2025 at 1:05 PM
How many people are willing to risk prosecutions for fraud and tax evasion just to save a few quid?
I doubt it’s a significant number.
November 27, 2025 at 12:55 PM
Do you mean they used the wrong rate because they got the banding wrong?
Why would that be an issue with a flat rate charged per mile? If the mileage is accurately logged then the amount of tax due is easily calculated, so you’d be fully aware of what it should be at any point in the year.
November 27, 2025 at 12:52 PM
How else are we meant to subsidise the French government if not by fixing wholesale electricity prices to the cost of generating power using natural gas?
November 27, 2025 at 11:54 AM
Why not have people submit mileage numbers monthly the way that they do for dumb gas/electric meters?
Pay as you go and submit readings yourself to manage payments, then have them verified on sale, service or MOT?
November 27, 2025 at 11:40 AM
If my house rocketed in value to £2m I’d simply sell it and move somewhere cheaper with no mortgage. No brainer, really.
November 27, 2025 at 11:37 AM
We need lots more cheap renewable electricity don’t we 🤭
November 27, 2025 at 11:35 AM
To be fair, an incentive is only needed to get people to switch over. That said, something should be done to help people with no home charging access cheaper charging, but the average petrol car gets about 8 miles per litre, which at £1.30 per litre is about 16p per mile, so still more expensive.
