Right now, COVID is surging. The current variant, JN.1* achieved dominance nationally as estimated by the CDC. Wastewater signal is already 2nd highest of the pandemic and not yet peaked everywhere.

It you take precautions, stay vigilant. If you wonder if you should be (yes) now is the time.

The last time the National SARS2 wastewater monitoring was this high was early January. We are undeniably in a surge. How fast/much disease spread remains to be seen, but we have some indication from EU that the trajectory will be high for this case wave.

CDC Nowcast showing dominance of the COVID variant HV.1 at ~29% for regions reporting.

Importantly, PCR testing and sequencing is very low. Our ability to understand recent changes and inputs to this model are greatly limited compared to what they once were. At this time BA.2.86.1 (JN.1) is <1%.
