The Aviation Environment Federation (AEF) campaigns on aviation’s impacts for people and the environment, including climate change, noise and air pollution.
The European Commission launches a plan to upgrade popular train routes to high-speed rail to reduce journey times.

Under the new plans, for example, traveling from Berlin to Copenhagen is reduced from 7 hours to 4.

In the UK aviation only pays APD and no fuel duty, and there is almost no carbon pricing on long-haul flying.

This essentially means that the UK Government is subsidising the most polluting form of transport. 2/4

AEF analysis shows that the UK would need agreements with just ten countries to cover 50% of the total aircraft fuel sold in the UK. 2/2

🚨 After months of taking evidence from campaigners, industry reps, and the Aviation Minister, the @CommonsEAC new report send a strong message to Government: airport expansion threatens the UK’s net zero goals 1/2 publications.parliament.uk/pa/cm5901/cm...

To put it in perspective, driving from London to Scotland would cost you almost quadruple in fuel duty compared to the cost of Air Passenger Duty if flying.

Examining the tax burdens of other transportation industries provides perspective on this issue.

Driving from London to Edinburgh incurs almost quadruple the tax compared to flying. 3/3

We agree! In our press release responding to the renewal of heathrow expansion plans, we highlight the danger of creating another white elephant such as HS2. 3/3

Expanding Heathrow would be an expensive mistake and is unlikely to deliver the growth the government is so desperately seeking.

Hundreds of thousands of people living in local communities will bear the brunt of this short-sighted project. 2/2

🚨New AEF report🚨

The UK Government has set the goal of 2% of aviation fuel supply in 2025 to comprise Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF), rising to 10% in 2030 and 22% in 2040.

But what are the supply chain risks? 🧐 1/4

The government is now considering two proposals for expanding Heathrow airport - we don’t think either of them will serve local communities or the planet. Let’s avoid another expensive HS2 style failure.

“Achieving net-zero aviation by 2050 is well within our collective grasp. SAF will undoubtedly play a key role in this journey, especially in the short to medium term. But it will not, by itself, be enough,” argues the World Economic Forum.

A major policy paradox? 😵‍💫

There is a policy conflict between airport expansion and climate commitments, argues @susannebecken.bsky.social from @griffith.edu.au, as she calls for greater scrutiny into the claimed benefits of airport expansion. 1/2

Among other issues, such as feedstock scarcity etc., SAFs can only reduce the overall emissions by a maximum of 70%.

These emissions savings come from the lifecycle of SAF production. The same amount of CO2 is produced at the tailpipe of the plane as when you burn kerosene. 2/3

AEF has joined a group of civil society and private sector signatories urging the UK Government to support the growth of the domestic power-to-liquid as the highest integrity option for the UK’s aviation sector.

Because SAFs create the same amount of CO2 at the tail pipe of the plane as traditional kerosene.

The emission saving comes from the carbon cycle in its production.

You are essentially excluding the most important part of the equation 🤯 4/5

As our Policy Manager, @chadceleste.bsky.social, outlined in front of the @commonseac.parliament.uk last week, aviation is not decarbonising fast enough and other policy measures, such as demand measures and frequent flyer levies, need to be considered. 4/4

🚨The Climate Change Committee is projecting 38% less Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) supply in 2040 than the amount expected to be required by the SAF mandate. @thecccuk.bsky.social 1/4

Celeste Hicks, AEF’s Policy Manager, explained at the @CommonsEAC last week that we are not decarbonising quickly enough; other policy levers need to be considered, such as carbon tax and demand management. 4/4

What do we mean by demand management and what does it have to do with aviation decarbonisation? 💭 ✈️

@chadceleste.bsky.social answers the hard questions during the @commonseac.parliament.uk session on compatibility of airport expansion with the UK’s climate targets.

A new report from @transenv.bsky.social shows some worrying results:
- Airline emissions soar to pre-COVID levels
- Almost 70% of aviation emissions from flights departing the EU remain UNPRICED

If aviation payed taxes equivalent to motorists, it would raise a further £7.5 billion for the Exchequer (on top of the £4 billion already collected through APD). 3/3

April 25, 2025 at 3:12 PM
There is a strong rationale for taxing aviation more, which pays no VAT or fuel duty. 2/3

Ironically, the source for AEF’s analysis comes from Government data.
