Next-generation geothermal systems can access geothermal heat virtually anywhere, dramatically expanding the range of locations where geothermal is viable. There are two types of next-generation systems: Enhanced Geothermal Systems and Advanced Geothermal Systems.

Geothermal energy can directly provide heat for industrial processes by heating water, generating steam, and heating air. Most geothermal systems use a heat exchanger to transfer heat from the geothermal fluid to the facility.

There is broad recognition that equity is critical to energy transitions, but a lack of metrics for evaluating outcomes hampers effective policymaking. A multi-institution team of researchers, Sage Kime, Veronica Jacome, David Pellow, & Ranjit Deshmukh, created a framework to address this challenge.
