DYK…there is an #HBCU located in the Caribbean...? Established on March 16, 1962 the University of the Virgin Islands is a land-grant HBCU with two campuses- in St. Thomas and St. Croix.

Congresswoman Joyce Beatty, an alumna of Central State University, represents Ohio’s 3rd District in Congress. As a member of the Ohio Legislature she was the first woman Democrat House leader in Ohio history.

Elizabeth City State alumna Dr. Vivian Burke became one of the 1st two Black women on the Winston-Salem Board of Aldermen (now City Council) She later became the 1st Black woman Mayor Pro Tempore of Winston-Salem.

#OTD in 1971 Kentucky State U. alum Whitney Moore Young Jr. died at age 49. Young was a social worker and civil rights leader who led the Urban League and aggressively worked to end employment discrimination and was active with the federal government's War on Poverty.

#OTD in 1994 Alonzo "Jake" Gaither died at age 90. Was a legendary football coach at #FAMU for more than 30 years retiring with a record of 204–36–4. As coach, the #Rattlers won 8 Black collegiate football national championships, produced, 36 All-Americans and sent 42 players to the #NFL.

Donella Brown Wilson, a teacher and alumna of Allen University was legally able to vote for the 1st time in 1948 when she was 39 years old. She voted in every local, state, and national election for the next 70 years.

In 2017 Alabama State U. & Miles Law alum Danny Carr became the 1st African-American appointed DA in Jefferson Co. Birmingham Division. In 2018 he was elected District Attorney for the 10th Judicial Circuit of Alabama.
