Despite the current US Government shutdown, the National Cryo-EM Facility housed at Frederick National Laboratory remains open. FNL is operated by federal contractors that are forward funded and we have not run out of money yet. This status may change depending on the length of the shutdown.

Disclaimer: I am fine.

But does anyone know of any good voids to scream into that are located in the DMV area? Just, you know, asking for general knowledge sake. Also, is a reservation is necessary?

Happy Anniversary to the National Cryo-EM Facility sponsored by the National Cancer Institute! We opened our doors 8 years ago on May 17, 2017. We started with a single Krios and have undergone a move, expansion and served over 170 primary investigators in the extramural cancer research community!

#cryoem protip: when walking into the microscope room during an upgrade and hearing the FSE say things are going well, do not say “wow, I guess this is going to be quick!” The microscope will hear you and promptly break when you exit the room.

Yes, I did this, and yes it happened. Learn from me.

The cryo-EM paradox, everything is running great and the sample queue is at a week, but if I announce the queue is short one or more instruments will break just as I receive an influx of samples.
