I'm not a fan of the NYT, but they're accurate to say that there's no proof she ever said it. In fact, I've seen some discussion that she disliked people using the word empathy in the way this quote does.

Aside from a bunch of people being asked where the quote came from in her works and not being able to cite it, several blogs talking about it not being attributed to her, and a complete lack of citation anywhere I've seen the quote, there's also this:
