Chook enrichment!

The roosters love it when they get extra treats throughout the day. Other swinging snacks we hang up for them are apple, cabbage, and lettuce 💜

The pigs love it when we do some gardening! Any grass that gets pulled out of the garden beds is given to the pigs as enrichment. They love eating the grass and rooting through any dirt clumps 🩷

King is such a cutie pie!

Did you know that sheep only have lower teeth at the front of their mouths? They have 8 lower incisors, and on the roof of the mouth above there is a hard dental pad.

Fennel is feeling better after recovering from a respiratory infection!

Recently, Fennel had green discharge coming from his nose and he was breathing very quickly. We had our vet up to see him and she prescribed 5 days of antibiotic injections. Thankfully Fennel is now back to his normal self 💜

Say hello to Poppy! This lovely little goat kid is around 3 and a half months old. She is a very sweet and affectionate goat kid and our crew have been more than happy to give her cuddles!

Today Lily took a trip to see our equine dentist! As always, she was very well-behaved. Lily needs to have dental appointments every 6 months to manage her ongoing teeth issues. She is always sedated for the procedures so that she remains calm and unbothered.

Bessie is a wild breed of pig called Captain Cook. She was orphaned as a young piglet after her mother was killed by a hunter and she has lived at the Black Sheep ever since. Bessie is now our oldest pig, being about 10 years old! She is a very sweet and affectionate pig who loves a good scratch 💜

Sunday is ready for dinner!

In her old age, Sunday has lost several back teeth. She struggles to chew hard food thoroughly, so we make her a special, soft porridge twice a day. She is often waiting patiently (and sometimes not so patiently 😅) at the gate!

New project completed! ✔️

Toffee and Nooch recently moved into a new paddock, one without a playground. Having ramps and platforms for goats to climb on provides many benefits - it provides enrichment, shade, and a solid surface for their hooves to stand on.

Sirius the steer is about 14 years old, an incredible achievement when you consider that he was never supposed to live longer than one week.

Tragically, around 2 million bobby calves in the dairy industry are killed in Aotearoa each year 💔 Sirius is one of the few lucky ones.

One of our recent rescues, King! ❤️

King has an adorable and unique appearance. His legs are quite long, making him taller than most of our flock. He also has some dark patches of hair on his face, notably around his nose and above his eyes, giving the illusion of 'eyebrows' 🤭

New project complete! ✔️

Recently, two of our volunteers finished building a shelter in one of our sheep paddocks! This structure is made with secondhand poles and corugated iron and will provide much needed protection from rain, wind, and sun😊
