I think it was very satisfying to see Susie finally open up enough to talk about her past, especially after the multichapter buildup of seeing her shed her facade and lower her guard around friends who genuinely care about her. The fact that she was telling actually SHOWED her growth.

IMO the most justifiable criticism of relying too much on telling is when Susie talks about her backstory. But even then, it’s been shown through Susie’s behavior and reactions what kind of past she’s had, so it’s not like it came out of nowhere.

Toby can’t just drip-fed us info about the world and the characters through observations for all seven chapters. At some point, characters have to talk to each other, correct each other, ask questions, share their feelings. If not that, what are the characters even supposed to say to each other?

It’s like in a mystery novel; at some point the detective has to lay their cards on the table and tell everyone how they solved the case. It’s not bad writing for the detective to monologue about what’s going on. It’s actually the MOST interesting part of the story.

This answers questions the audience has been wondering about for 2 chapters, and it gives all the characters a baseline for new story elements to develop, like Susie refuting Ralsei’s beliefs that Darkners are somehow less “real” than lighteners.
