NewAthena, the 2nd large #CosmicVision mission, will be the biggest X-ray observatory ever built. It’ll probe the hottest, most energetic parts of the Universe. Adoption expected in 2027, launch in 2037 on Ariane 6.4. Meanwhile, its community of 1130 scientists are shaping its science case.

Today #NewAthenaPeople is Francisco J. Carrera Troyano.
He is full Professor at the Universidad de Cantabria and member of the IFCA (IFCA, CSIC-UC). He has been a postdoc at Mullard Space Science Laboratory / UCL (UK) and at IFCA.

He is a senior researcher at INAF in Palermo and he is a member of the NewAthena Science Study team.
Ciro’s research primarily focuses on the connection between the growth of black holes and the local star formation.

At #ICSO2024 in Antibes, Michela Todaro et al. presented results on the wide-band transmission response of filters for the X-IFU detector aboard the NewAthena Observatory.

Marine Martin-Lagarde, Athena study manager, presented the main conclusions of the review in the NewAthena/X-IFU Consortium meeting, last week.
Mission Adoption Review shall now go ahead as planned in Jun 2026 for Adoption in 2027. 🚀
