Even this sometimes didn't help, occasionally the book just goes "and Jimmy-Bob was there and let me in :)" and that's the first ever instance of Jimmy-Bob and he never actually gets directly introduced. That seems to mostly happen with (people who seem to be) servants though.

Honestly this is *THE BOOK* that has felt most beneficial to read on my old kindle. The ability to just select a name and find every preceding instance of it was a lifesaver.

I struggled to get through the Paris setup (the section that's 40 to 50% through the book) as the pacing slows, the character gallery quadruples and most of the existing guys change names, but once I got past it (two months) the next 800 pages just flew by.
