There are already Black & Brown people doing the labor for free and putting it out there. Better yet, support those Black & Brown people if they list ways you can support their work.

And once your reputation is tarnished, it’s hard to come back from.

While I wish my fellow artists the best, this is NOT how you get commissions. As I told that person, that’s how you lose customers and get blocked and get a bad reputation. The art community is large and small artists often feel unseen, but it TALKS.

Finally I said “Look, I'm gonna be upfront with you as a fellow artist who does commissions. This is not how you get commissions. This is how you get blocked by potential customers and get a bad reputation.”

They started being pushy and telling me how much I’d owe them upfront and bargaining with me, but wouldn’t tell me what the full price would end up being. I kept telling them no.

Instead of telling them “I’m an artist too and can make my own piece,” I politely declined and informed them money is tight for me right now since I’m a grad student. They wouldn’t take no for an answer.

I had someone message me on tumblr saying they’re an artist. (They/them pronouns for anonymity.) They shared some of their art with me. I was polite. I didn’t reach out to them but I get networking as an artist is hard. But then they offered to commission a piece for me and things went downhill…
