And sometimes those conversations get leaked by the various parties involved for all kinds of reasons. The percentage of deals done out of deals discussed has to be minuscule. But it makes for good entertainment, especially if your team is underachieving (looking at my Cavs here).

All of the GMs are always taking to each other. You should always know what your needs are, what other teams' needs are, what the market is for guys you want and guys you have now. That's just due diligence.
