Something like List PR for electors, and exhaustive ballot in the Electoral College would work better (as it would force parties/presidential candidates to court other lists in their campaign and post-campaign, whilst preventing deadlock)

Voters on the left of Labour and the Tories would be willing to vote Lib Dem or Greens instead. They could be squeezed but only if an election is close (which current polling doesn't indicate)
