A small coin purse. A dagger. A set of lock picks. A folded piece of parchment. It's as Vanya goes to unfold the parchment that her hands still, and two things happen at once. One, the presence of lock picks dawns on her. That this is someone like her. Another thief. Two, the soft sound of something shifting, akin to that of a serpent shedding its skin, pricks at her ears. A flash of silver in the faint light. Steel pressed delicately, yet firmly against the length of her throat, accompanied by warm breath at her ear. “Now that I have your attention," comes a honeyed, accented voice, "care to tell me what you're doing here?"

Then, the words seem to catch up with her. Her eyes narrow. “What were you doing at the Scale?” “Jes invited me back for cards last night. Figured it was easier to stay—” “Aren’t you banned?” “Well, I mean, it wasn’t with them—” Vanya rolls her eyes, shoving the journal into the bag at her side. Shrugs the strap over her shoulder. “—it was for them. I watched. An impartial judge in case someone cheated.” He coughs into his fist. “Anyway, your lead?”

My first memory is of waking up in a field with no visible markers in sight. I had a name, one that I assumed to be mine and would come to claim as such. I understood the scars on my chest, but I couldn’t recall how or when they appeared, just that I knew they were meant to be there. Slowly, the late winter sun waned, and the sister moons rose, each one half-full, a mirror of one another. Higher and higher they climbed, yet the firelight continued to burn as bright as it had hours ago. A refusal to acknowledge the dwindling minutes. If Bastien went to sleep, come morning he’d be faced with the cold realization that the man laying beside him was leaving. That tomorrow would be the last time he’d wake beside him. When the Quarry went from a series of cave systems cut off by interested third parties with varied motivations to a sprawling city, someone in the chain of command made the executive decision to leave the routes as they were. The original tunnels and caverns were to remain mostly untouched. Meaning that, upon its founding, it was extremely easy to get lost. Some tunnels took you in circles, others led to nowhere. And while some historians fixed blame to those too distracted by legends of dragons and gold, more scholars attributed it to the lack of light. MOTHLIGHT by @thatfunkylilfey

Yet tonight when I wake, bleary-eyed, gaze turned towards the ceiling, a new image remains imprinted on the backs of my eyelids, reforming with each blink. Wings. Wings the color of pale peach flesh, that share the same softness as the skin. There are eyes—no, it is only a pattern.
