Reading through my old Field Guide from when I quit my job 5 years ago to make ADHD content full-time.

My life looks so different now… but some things never change 💕
UNCOVER YOUR WHY I want to make more comics. WHY? Making art makes me happy. WHY? It allows me to creatively express my emotions, experiences, frustrations, behaviors… I get to be myself. WHY? Because I’m very self-aware of my own tendencies, and I’m funny. I feel comfortable being vulnerable online. WHY? I’ve finally found an internet community that knows what it’s like to be me. Seeing themselves through the lens of my own experiences is cathartic and helps them feel less alone. It’s a helpful, cathartic resource for them to share with the people in their lives. WHY? Because it’s difficult to describe experiences with words—and words alone. Plus, this stuff is hard to talk about. WHY? Because unless you have ADHD, you can’t really know what it feels like to have it. It’s not something that only happens sometimes, or in just one place like school or work. It touches every part of our lives. And we deserve to feel understood. WHY? Because we’ve been misunderstood for so long, which has destroyed our self-esteem. Because it feels like people are mad at us all the time. WHY? Because our behaviors frustrate them. Because we don’t make sense to them. Because they think we’re doing this on purpose. Because they think we’re not “trying” hard enough to change. And we shouldn’t have to. WHY? Because we shouldn’t have to change ourselves to be loved (or accepted) for who we really are. Because we’re tired of hiding our struggles and being ashamed. WHY? Because we are not “broken.” We are just different. And neurotypicals need to understand that. WHY? Because our relationships with others have a profound impact on our lives. And unless they can begin to understand how difficult “simple” things can be for us, we will not receive the compassion and accommodations we deserve. WHY? Because we’ll just go on struggling in a world and blaming ourselves—one built by neurotypicals, and most of the systems/structures within it were not made with us in mind. WHY? Because ADHD wasn’t diagnosed (or even in the DSM) until the last few decades. And it’s underdiagnosed in women and communities of color. WHY? Because many don’t have access. Many get misdiagnosed. Many blame themselves and never thought it could be ADHD. Many parents, teachers, and even some doctors still believe outdated stereotypes and common misconceptions. WHY? Because most ADHD studies were performed on young white boys. How it can easily be misdiagnosed—or missed entirely—in women hasn’t been widely talked about. And because up to this point, ADHD was this shameful thing nobody wanted to talk about openly. Many people felt like it was a personal deficiency or character flaw. And it’s not. WHY? Because our brains literally operate differently. We think differently—which we don’t always realize—and we behave differently as well. And “different” isn’t bad or wrong. It can be beautiful. WHY? Because we shake things up. We challenge so many societal norms, and we question things others don’t. Plus… how boring would it be to live in a world where everyone was exactly the same?

Fun fact: in the 1960s, Civil Rights protestors were given literal classes on nonviolent protest; they didn't all just spontaneously know what to do.
