it's absolutely ridiculous to me. The movie has no redeeming qualities. Not one. And yet, here t is scooping up awards like it's groundbreaking and I'm just here like 🤷🏾 this is wjy I don't tale award ceremonies seriously anymore. At this point its a joke

I don't want to sound like a Kendrick bootlicker lol but I thought that the performance representing America and its values also critiqued the policies, the deportations and the dehumanization of BIPOC people under Trump. It might have seemed miopic, but I think it was also a blanket critique.

I guess it's just about authenticity at the end of the day. I understand wanting a more overt message like your example with Beyonce. I think Kendrick did a good job at critiquing the current American zeitgeist and his experience in it as a Black man.

You know Kendrick. Everything is about entendres and sneak disses. Trolling Drake was just surface-level. He was sneak dissing America throughout the whole performance

2/2 Even the "Say Drake, I hear you like 'em young," when he performed Not Like Us wasn't (just) for Drake; I think he was also directing it to Donald Trump and the new normal of lack of accountability in American politics.

1/2 I think he made several references to the state of America. Samuel L Jackson as Uncle Sam making satirical comments throughout the performance. The moment he referenced "40 acres and a mule" which Black Americans were promised but never got.
