Left and right are literally relative and not absolute descriptors. The democrats, unfortunately, exist at the left pole of mainstream US political discourse. Is it far to the right of the left wing in many liberal democracies? Yes. You know what Marche meant and are being deliberately obtuse.

It’s really not lazy thinking, quite the opposite. Left and right are always relative terms (“leftist” may not be, but left is). The absolute continuum you are shown in grade 10 social studies has pretty limited application in the real world where Overton windows shift from decade to decade.

Left is defined relatively here (the “American left”, not the left in any absolute sense). There is no American “true” left of any political relevance, and anyone with genuinely left-leaning politics is forced to put a “D” next to their names to seek election. Marche is not an idiot - he knows this.
