💧 Environmental charity that works with communities to restore and look after rivers, water and nature across London and the Thames Basin.💧
Great to see members of our 'IR' team coming together in Greenwich, southeast London, to exchange knowledge and build skills around nature-based solutions for flood prevention. From exploring effective leaky dams to sharing best practices, it was a valuable day of collaboration and learning.

🎂This year’s theme will focus on London Rivers Week's 10th anniversary. We are eager to hear from London-based river lovers, artists, creatives, producers, river enthusiasts, young people, and heritage professionals.⬇️

🎺We are accepting expressions of interest to participate in London Rivers Week 2026 (Saturday 23rd May to Sunday 31st June). London Rivers Week is a week-long annual campaign inspiring the public to connect with and appreciate London’s rivers and the projects to restore them.⬇️🧵

🚮This is not the end of the story. We would still like to see systematic change. Water companies need to up their game. Manufacturers need to bring out alternatives and consumers need to bin their wet wipes and not throw them into the toilets.
November 18, 2025 at 10:33 AM
🥳A massive thank you to all our volunteers, supporters and partners who helped to make this happen. Thanks also to our wider team (past and present) and Thames River Watch team to help collect data to lobby for change.⬇️

Thames21 has been tirelessly campaigning to ban plastic in wet wipes for many years. We have worked with volunteers to build evidence, told the story to the media, engaged with the Government and worked with partners to push for change.⬇️
November 18, 2025 at 10:33 AM
😀The government is expected to sign a ban on the sale of plastic wet wipes into law today. Thames21’s Liz Gyekye made an excellent appearance on BBC Breakfast earlier this morning talking about the great news.⬇️

Did you catch us on BBC South this evening regarding the news about the massive illegal waste dump threatening the River Cherwell? T21's Claire Robertson spoke about the environmental catastrophe unfolding in plain sight in Oxfordshire. Watch back 2mins 18 secs in. www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/epis...

“If this waste isn't contained, every storm and flood, will carry fragments of this plastic further downstream, poisoning wildlife, suffocating habitats, and leaving a legacy of pollution that could last thousands of years. We need swift, coordinated action now."
November 17, 2025 at 10:02 AM
“This is one of the most distressing cases of environmental neglect we’ve seen on the River Cherwell, if not in all of Oxfordshire” said Claire Robertson, Oxford Rivers Project Officer at Thames21.⬇️
November 17, 2025 at 10:02 AM
Thames21 is calling on the Environment Agency and local councils to act urgently to work together to secure and remove the waste before winter rains cause catastrophic plastic pollution.⬇️
November 17, 2025 at 10:02 AM
The field where the dump is located floods regularly, prompting serious concern from Thames21 that tonnes of plastic could soon be washed directly into the River Cherwell and on into the River Thames, polluting hundreds of miles of waterways and damaging ecosystems.⬇️
November 17, 2025 at 10:02 AM
It is not clear who has dumped the enormous mound of shredded plastic waste, but it is believed to have been dumped by an organised crime group or groups.⬇️
November 17, 2025 at 10:02 AM
A shocking illegal rubbish dump, stretching over 100 metres long, 20 metres wide, and 10 metres high, has been discovered in a field beside the River Cherwell near Kidlington in Oxfordshire.⬇️
November 17, 2025 at 10:02 AM
All river stakeholders, including the Environment Agency and Cherwell District Council, need to work together in a swift manner to prevent a massive illegal waste dump from being washed into the River Cherwell, according to environmental charity Thames21.⬇️ 📸©Thames21

Many column inches have been devoted to the sewage pollution challenge in the River Thames in recent times. The river faces other threats, such as toxic road runoff pollution and plastic pollution.⬇️
November 14, 2025 at 10:54 AM
🥇We want to send out a huge thank you to the local communities we work with, our volunteers, partners, supporters, staff and funders. None of the achievements that we have made to fulfil our mission would have been possible without you all.🥇⬇️
November 14, 2025 at 10:54 AM
🪇🎂🥳This year marks the 21st anniversary of Thames21 — two decades and one year of working with our volunteers, local communities, partners and funders to help protect the River Thames, its tributaries and surrounding ecosystems.⬇️
