Worked the Sunday 7-3 shift at front desk of my college dorm (Burton-Judson 87-88), when each floor still had a hall phone. Switchboard had cloth-covered cords, plugs and (I think) there was a little ringer switch that you let you ring at your own rhythm, like an apartment buzzer.
