Probably 'Temple of Doom' seems 'bizarrely out of place in the 1980s' since it was majorly influenced by Fritz Lang's '50's 'Tiger of Eschnapur'/'The Indian Tomb'. Many scenes seem nearly shot for shot. Apparently Lang's silent films ('The Spiders'?) were influential too, but I have not seen them.

Now that's a book! Many details stick with. E.g., after the war, playing rugby with Irishmen in Limerick: "How jovially they jumped on me, and rubbed my face in the mud!"
