Exploring the history of NY’s Floating Hospital, sharing stories of life on the water, the people onboard & the vibrant harbor that surrounded them.
1895: Mothers and small children from NY's tenements waiting to board the River Belle, our first floating hospital. All healthcare, food and salt water bathing was free, supported by voluntary donations from the general public.

1930: A nurse gives a class on caring for a baby. The American Manufacturing Company in the background was Brooklyn’s largest employer with 4,000, mostly Polish, then Puerto Rican women, who made rope 56 hrs a week for low wages. Doubtless we helped a lot of those workers and their families.

Our first ship, launched 1875, was called the River Belle, though everyone called her “The Floating Hospital of St. John’s Guild” and gave free medical care, food and saltwater baths to NY's poorest, without regard to creed, color or nationality. She was renamed the Emma Abbott in 1899.
