Some autumn impressions of our Scottish longterm research site the Girnock - some of you have been there 😉

“Interesting” River restoration on the river Don Cairngorms Scotland
September 30, 2025 at 4:28 PM
Great to see some natural regeneration of Scots Pine in the Cairngorms- usually on Estates which keep deer numbers at a normal rate (and don’t artificially keep numbers up for sport shooting). Then trees are just coming back … for free

St Cyrus Beach - just clouds, sky, the sea …
September 22, 2025 at 7:27 PM
… and trying to do tree regeneration in tiny plots near the stream (which don’t even provide shading!) when 99% of the catchment area is overgrazed and burned! Whom are they kidding by calling it “re-gen”?

Today REALLY bad examples of land management in the Scottish Highlands: burning heather up to the stream, then being surprised about soil and land erosion!
September 9, 2025 at 2:13 PM
Been in the hills again today - extensive land degradation due to muirburning (for grouse bird shooting!) and peat erosion … no trees manage to regenerate due to overgrazing

Interested in canoeing, Canadian Wilderness, the barren lands, the North? I can only warmly recommend this fascinating book by my friend and hydrology colleague Jim McNamara @jpmboise.bsky.social. You can SEE the landscape and hear the clicking of the caribou

The Cairngorms in Scotland: it Looks so wild and Natural but it is such an intensively managed landscape (heather burning, overgrazing by deer and sheep) - there should be trees growing everywhere

New paper alert integrating #isotope-aided with N-modelling to quantify (dis)connections of different flow paths & related biogeochemical transformations with spatially-explicit estimates of water ages & Damköhler no. ‪@kinarnicholas.bsky.social‬ cld u highlight? THANKS! doi.org/10.1029/2025...

And today it’s some mountains in Wester Ross NW Highlands Scotland: a symphony of rocks, sky and peatlands…
July 17, 2025 at 7:39 PM
A symphony of waters: rivers, sea, lochs. The NW Highlands of #Scotland are a wonderland for any hydrologist. So grateful being able to experience this landscape!
July 16, 2025 at 5:42 PM
…. More #isotope sampling today across Wester Ross NW Highlands in Scotland
July 14, 2025 at 6:20 PM
…and the Sampling of water stabile #isotopes across the Wester Ross has begun… for understanding water sources and flow pathways in this mindblowing landscape & dream of any hydrologist

In two weeks we will spend a week in Ullapool again; can’t wait to revisit all the places there having in mind your beautiful descriptions of light, colors and landscapes !

and yet another data logger stolen: this time for soil moisture measurements in the Oder floodplain. It always hurts - particularly that we lost > 2 months of data during an extremely dry period. Science IS important.

On Saturday is "show your stripes day". Here is our plot for Berlin, Germany already: Berlin @igb-berlin.de is already one of the driest regions in Germany. Projections state P will decline (by 10-20%) and T will increase. Population currently grows by 1% p.a. You can do the maths!

Had the important evaluation of our Institute @igb-berlin.de. Super proud of anyone in Department 1 Ecohydrology & Biogeochemistry 4 the enthusiastic presentation of our department. You all rock - what a great team! Thank you!! Huge thanks also to the reviewers for their time and input!

And some more in all my enthusiasm. AND: while there I met a 96 yr old geoscientist as enthusiastic as I was - I wish and hope I can still do this when I am his age! He inspired me so much - and reminded me WHY I love this work so much

In my view a TOTALLY impressive, beautiful large wetland created by a beaver dam in Alt Madlitz Brandenburg today. Sound on - oh I love such sounds! Would you have guessed that such nature exists 45 min drive from Berlin?

Very happy & pleased to welcome Dr Xinyang Fan in our group today: first recipient of our female fellowship in Ecohydrology (funded by the Kurt Bode Foundation). Already lots of talking on the importance of female networks and knowing “one is not alone”! Together with the female stars of my group…

Back from #EGU25 simply great to speak to so many friends and colleagues, discussing our recent research; great talks by all our ECRs from the Landscape Ecohydrology group. Highlight was Jan Seiberts Darcy Lecture and being able to celebrate with Jan!
May 1, 2025 at 7:55 AM
Final talk of the group #EGU by PhD Hanwu Zheng on large scale #tracer-aided modeling in the #Spreewald and value of isotopes. Well done Han great talk! Pls still see us in the isotope poster session today
April 30, 2025 at 7:00 AM
3rd talk by our group #EGU25 by group member Dr Cong Jiang on isotope-aided long term modeling on effects of forest management on water partitioning into ET and groundwater recharge.
April 29, 2025 at 7:17 AM
2nd talk of the group already: Dr Maria Warter talking about linking #eDNA, hydro chemistry, #isotopes. Great talk Maria! Several more talks from the group until Wed #EGU25
