It's interesting, given how much certain apps have tried to create overlapping features (Snapchat, Instagram, twitter) that there hasn't been a noticeable attempt to do what you say.

I totally agree with that. And I went to check Diaspora and it's closing down this year. I wish we were in a place where the need for online public space was recognised, valued and built.
