Here I was talking about the consequences of the changes in classifications (and who was labelled as belonging in them) for conceptualising biological studies. Our discussion focused on the use of such classifications in microbiome research.

Important point—in this argument (which I support), the anarchy is not apolitical, even if it's tempting to think so.
Once again with feeling... the capacity to behave like this is a symptom of their own privilege and implicit disdain for the concept of making anything better. It's extremely rightwing.

Lordy... where do I begin.

So considering the author of the op-ed was a co-author on a paper comparing pain levels by racial groups in the US, then I would venture that yes, he surely does need his humanities colleagues.
In which a Yale prof calls for jettisoning humanities to make way for science-only universities.

“scientists… are being punished for the sins of [humanities scholars] because we all live under one roof. I cannot see a compelling reason for our continued cohabitation.”
Unyoke the Sciences From the Humanities

If you are interested in the history of racial classification in South Africa -- or a visual depiction of how categories shifted historically, driven by political, economic, and social interests, we have an infographic for you.

Find it here: figshare.com/articles/fig...
Here is an infographic that Tessa Moll (@tessamuldvarp.bsky.social) and I made about the development of racial classifications in South Africa from 1652 to the present. A paper explaining its content is in the works. For now, feel free to download the infographic here: dx.doi.org/10.6084/m9.f...
