Ultimately, @adamwiggins.bsky.social's talk sought to bring the idealists and pragmatists closer together.

In my work at @germnetwork.com and beyond, I'm always asking how we can be pragmatic about pursuing and realizing our ideals.

Thanks for the history and the glimpse forward.

Adam also raised concerns around lasting digital archives.

As a writer, I'd also encountered digital archiving work done to keep contemporary writers' archives alive, when they were produced, natively, on disc—not paper. For example, David Foster Wallace's archives.

Ownership of my manuscripts was core to my early understanding of local first. Long before I ever heard of Martin Kleppman, I heard of other writers who’d gotten locked out of their Google Drive accounts because their private drafts went out of bounds. (Hey, isn't freedom of speech a thing?)

Onwards! So when Adam said the web is a software distribution platform, I found myself thinking about how Germ connections are distributed in person, through shared links, but also through #atproto. Is atproto the real coming of web3? (don't yell at me)

He highlighted the work of the @eff.org and in particular how @letsencrypt.bsky.social brought https to the world (shoutout @ipv.sx, a Germ advisor and generous collaborator)— but also reminded us this is how online banking and shopping are possible

He reminded us that encryption was once a controlled weapons export - something I never knew until I sat in on @riana.bsky.social’s class last year. Apparently a professor alleging infringement of academic freedom to teach advanced math pushed against this control!

Very excited to see cybersecurity creator Tazin Khan speak about everyday threat models and how we get ahead of them.

She’s also chic af. But not on Bluesky!

How do we keep going? The collective gives us power, including to take risks.

Dr. @ruha9.bsky.social is Princeton’s finest but also closed by reminding us she’s on probation for protesting with students.

What an inspiring speaker, for real.

Not all speed is movement. - Toni Cade Bambara

The world may be ending. But there are other worlds. - Octavia Butler

Some quotes Dr. @ruha9.bsky.social dropped at #MozFest this morning

“In an era of automated bullshit,” Dr. @ruha9.bsky.social asks us to tell the truth! Starting with the fact that innovation often depends on exploitation… so social progress can never be taken for granted.

What are we building? For whom? With whom?

Strong start to the weekend from @robin.berjon.com.
