I would recommend looking to see if there are any game dev groups in your local area that you could join. The group I'm in does monthly playtest events which I find to be invaluable, even if just for scratching that itch to share my work.

I feel like every genre is overcrowded, so its fine to just work on whatever you have the motivation for. That being said, for me gamedev is a side hustle that I don't need to make a profit, so I guess it comes down to how much of a risk you are willing to take.
