Trying to get my thoughts together about the passing of George Smith. He didn't publish a lot, but everything he did put out there deserves to be read more by philosophers. Like this one, with Jed Buchwald, trying to take head-on Kuhn's incommensurability thesis:

My own contribution to the George Smith volume is on John Herschel. I trace Herschel's concept of residual phenomena back to work he was doing on physical astronomy, in particular an article he wrote in 1823 for the Encyclopaedia Metropolitana.
