Vicious (2025) What begins as an interesting concept becomes convoluted and doesn’t make a lot of sense. An argument could be made for nightmare logic, but the movie’s potential just falls flat. Bryan Bertino, director of The Strangers, tries to reinvent home invasion. It’s just okay. 7/10
Don’t Breathe 2 (2021) Completely unnecessary, but if you were interested in more into on the Blind Man, this one features a kid who together must fight another home invasion. The villain to anti-hero is supposed to be the draw, but falls flat. Moderately enjoyable, instantly forgettable. 7/10

Don’t Breathe (2016) Fede Alvarez proves himself to be an auteur of horror films with this incredibly tense and realistic film about a break-in gone wrong. Jane Levy is superb once again, and the film continues to deliver from beginning to end. Well worth a watch, 9/10.

Shelby Oaks (2025) Creates an interesting blend of found footage and classic ghost story narrative, though it’s nothing special. One of the better of batch of 2025 horror films to come out during spooky season. Paranormal investigators disappear in a haunted ghost town, and the hunt goes bad. 7/10

Prince of Darkness (1987) Gothic and moody, Carpenter again shows his knack for Lovecraftian horror with this dark and slow film. The religious setting and subtext makes it drag on like a church service, but the tone and dread present throughout drives the momentum. Worth a watch, not his best. 8/10

Possession (1981) Not a fast-paced film by any means, but an entrancing psychological film that borders on insanity throughout most of its running time. For fans of Suspiria, The Omen, and other horror films that are slow burners. A work of manic art, for fans of melodramatic horror. 10/10

I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House (2016) Beautiful, poetic, but painfully slow, this Netflix original directed by Osgood Perkins moves at a snail’s pace. Though common for his films, this one even more so. If not for the gorgeous imagery and intelligent crafting, it wouldn’t hold. 7/10

The Blackcoat’s Daughter (2015) Osgood Perkins’ first film as a director begins familiar and even predictable but some choices are made in the last 15-20 minutes that really make the film memorable despite its cliches. Solid first effort from a director who has a small but powerful filmography, 8/10

Watching Blackcoat’s Daughter (2015) and everyone in this movie is giving me bad vibes.

Horror has really leaned into the “desolate cabin” vibe this year:

Wolf Man
Black Phone 2
Bone Lake
Together
Keeper
Dreameater
Companion
Good Boy
Until Dawn
Bring Her Back
The Strangers: Chapter 2
The Woman in the Yard*

*Farmhouse, so different but not really

Cemetery Man (1994) Charming in its absurdity, this is a great mix of horror, romance, comedy, and over-the-top Italian melodrama. Rupert Everett starring in a film like this so shortly before his big rise to fame shows a side of a familiar actor going against type. A brilliant work of art, 9/10.

Night of the Reaper (2025) Generic babysitter slasher with a cool mask but not much else. Panders to the audiences’ 80’s nostalgia by setting the action in Reagan-era suburbia. So slow it may take you several attempts to finish it. It’s not bad, it’s just nothing special. Wish it was more, 7/10

Good Boy (2025) A very well made and beautifully shot movie, but not without its faults. Indy the dog is superb, but focusing on him doesn’t really give the audience any background info on what’s happening. Vague to a fault, and the end result feels a bit lacking. A valiant effort, generously 8/10

The Black Phone (2021) A well crafted abduction thriller with a paranormal element. Ethan Hawke’s performance is worth the hype, and the look of the film is bleak with a glimmer of hope. An above average mix of modern thriller and nostalgic fantasy. Good start to a franchise with potential, 8/10.

#BlackPhone2 (2025) Eclipses the original film pretty substantially. This is a horror opus, with director Scott Derrickson employing the grainy “Sinister” texture to dream sequences, making the Grabber a next gen Krueger-esque boogeyman. My expectations were high, and the film exceeded them. 9/10

Night of the Demons (2009) A direct-to-video remake of an 80’s masterpiece that takes the hollow shell of the story and crudely pastes it into a generic 2000’s horror comedy. Results are mixed: script and acting is shaky, decent soundtrack, and terrible CGI. Unneeded, but not offensively bad. 7/10

Bats (1999) Run-of-the-mill creature feature that has a couple stars in it but is too generic and charmless to be fun. It wants to be a brainless popcorn flick but the enjoyment level is not where it needs to be. A movie I want to like more, but just don’t. Not really worth the time, 6/10.

#V/H/S/Halloween (2025) The best collection of short films the franchise has created since the epic first sequel. Shameless in their Halloween horror fetishism, offering a sinister or twisted take on basically every aspect of the holiday. The best themed film you’re gonna find this year. 9/10
October 9, 2025 at 12:48 AM
V/H/S: Viral (2014) Despite a strong opening segment, this one just doesn’t hit. The thread story doesn’t make sense, the collection of stories isn’t substantial (especially given the grand scale of its predecessor, V/H/S/2.) Worth watching in context of franchise, but not amazing. 7/10

IT (2017) It’s a tall order to successfully recreate a iconic character like Pennywise, but this is the best effort in modern horror. It makes its own horror opera that shows up even Tim Curry’s performance in the made-for-TV movie. A perfect reimagining of a classic horror tale. Flawless, 10/10

V/H/S/85 (2023) Not a hit or a miss, but good collection. None of the short films are anything special, but in terms of an anthology film, especially in this franchise, it’s unusual to get an even film. This one might not be a standout, but it is an enjoyable overall found footage assortment. 8/10

Djinn (2013) A disappointing final film from Tobe Hooper, RIP. Plays out like a soap opera quality Devil’s Advocate, though it is interesting from a cultural aspect. The jumps scares are tame and uninspired, the horror tropes seem jumbled together with no real thought. A forgettable film,6/10.

Him (2025) A commentary on toxic masculinity and sports fandom culture, though unsure what point the film is trying to make. Was expecting a better performance from Marlon Wayans, but it doesn’t even hit the bar of good villain acting , much less exceeds it. The last 25 minutes are nonsensical. 6/-0

#28WeeksLater (2007) Though not a huge fan of the first film, I find this one very enjoyable. The backstabby human drama elevates the movie to add emotion to the story. Not to say it holds up on its own without the original, but it is a sequel that is generally better. 8/10

#28DaysLater (2002) Regarded as a modern classic, but I just don’t think this transcends the zombie genre, much less Romero. I find it trite and uneventful, a movie with the plot of a mediocre video game. Just doesn’t do it for me, though I appreciate its influence. On a good day, 7/10.
