This might be part of why I live here. The theater is filling up for a Wednesday night screening of the 1940 film The Mortal Storm, a part of a “F**k the Nazis” film series.

I had plans for today before I learned of the scheduled economic blackout, so I will be spending some money, but I will be channeling it to small businesses and local arts organizations. Keep it small and local if you need to buy today. (Art by Martha Rich)

I can’t look! So, I will snuggle instead. Cats are much better than many humans.

On this day: In 1941, Lindbergh recommended to Congress that the U.S. should sign a neutrality agreement w/Hitler. Good thing Lindbergh didn't have the internet. In 1957, Wham-O got the rights to what became known as the frisbee, & in 1964, the 24th Amendment made poll taxes unconstitutional.

Today is MLK Jr.'s actual birthday. Also, on this day in 1793, Louis XVI had his date with the guillotine. Today you can celebrate the birthdays of Christian Dior and Benny Hill. And it is National Hugging Day. (Demonstration below is a still from the 1946 film The Best Years of Our Lives.)

I just heard about the passing of David Lynch. Appropriately, the news seems a bit surreal. RIP.

On this day in 1904, the magnificent British photographer Cecil Beaton was born. Cecil shares a birthday with LL Cool J, because the world is full of juxtapositions that may or may not be meaningful, but putting things together in unexpected ways is how we keep from boring ourselves to death.

I have arrived! Good afternoon! The cats are catting. I am working (I swear). It's cold. There is cool stuff on the planet. Let's do this. (Photo: Ellen von Unwerth)
