Western harbor, Xiamen, China. 2025-12-13 around 11:15 am. Phone | monochrome conversion, traditional treatment in LR Mobile. This visit to Xiamen, I carried the Gowland 8x10 with me. We’ll see whether I use it! Things are complicated because the TSA folks in Syracuse told me they’d never seen a box of 8x10 sheet film before and insisted on sending it through the X-ray, which looked like one of the higher power modern ones. Delta 100, so perhaps I’m worried about nothing: I’m sure I’ve forgotten and sent 400TX through that machine with no noticeable ill effects.

I was riding shotgun; this is cropped to 4x5 to remove the dashboard. This shot reminds me how much I like the motion blur with leaf shutters. With a focal plane shutter at 1/50 sec, there would be artifacts.

Semi Leotax R 6x4.5 folding camera | 400TX | 1/50 at f/16 | N+2 dev: HC-110 1+31 17:46 at 18.7 C | scan: Sony 7R IV + Zeiss 50mm (borrowed from @bosak) | Grain2Pixel | traditional treatment in LR+PS Despite being a sunny day, it was very dark because of the narrow street and surrounding buildings. I was in a hurry and didn't want to get the meter out; underexposed by about two stops (based on looking at the negative). The neg was *very* thin and very high contrast when stretched out. Ticker tape parades traditionally run up Broadway from Battery Park to City Hall. In 2010 or so, the Downtown Alliance installed granite memorials along the route at roughly 20 foot intervals, one for each parade. The strip at the bottom of the frame commemorates the second parade (the first one officially organized).

My sister and one of her granddaughters, during the weekend celebration of her 60th wedding anniversary. Corpus Christi, TX, October 26, 2025, around 11am. Semi Leotax R 6x4.5 folder | Portra 160 | 1/25 at f/3.5 | dev/scan The Darkroom Lab | traditional treatment in LR/PS. I don't remember whether this roll was expired, but there was a definite green cast on the entire roll that needed to be corrected. This shot was underexposed -- I wasn't going to try 1/10, and f/3.5 is all the lens would give me. I cropped for composition. The biggest treatment: focus was not sharp on my sister's face. Not surprising with f/3.5 and zone focus! So I applied enough unsharp mask, selectively, in Photoshop to give some definition to the stripes and to her eyes; it made things acceptable for me (and I liked the expressions). No need for AI to patch thing up.

Looks pretty significant to me... the details in the retraction are pretty specific: important other reports were overlooked; and litigation revealed that (apparently) Monsanto funded the authors & wrote some of the paper...

Screenshot of Zadig 2.9 Options, showing that you want "List All Devices" checked, and "Ignore Hubs or Composite Parents" unchecked. Very important, as you want WinUSB on the top-level device. libusb can't deal with it if it's on a function of a multi-function device, alas.

Town of Ulysses, Finger Lakes, upstate New York. November 8, 2017, 8:21am. Phone photo, recent re-processed in LR Mobile. I don't know what's going on with the lines in the sky, probably just unusual flare. The phone data says "ISO 32, 1/3000, f/2.2" so using a not very handy calculator I get "ISO 32, 1/60, f/16" which tells me it was about a stop brighter than "normal full sunshine". (After I used that terrible calculator I used the slide rule, er, Gossen analog meter and confirmed.) Anyway, it was bright, and the sun was just out of the field-of-view to the left (I cropped from 4/3 to 5/4) so I imagine some kind of internal reflection in the phone lens created the spokes-and-rim effect.

Shear pattern (I suppose what's called an "branch attachment") in fallen crack-willow trunk, October 19, 2025, 3:25pm. Town of Ulysses, Finger Lakes, upstate New York.. We had an enormous (60', 40" base) crack willow stabilizing the bank where the creek leaves the pond. The main trunk fell late this summer, splitting near the base. We think it was about 100 years old. This knot was revealed right at the base of the split. The wood to the left of the split looks like clean heart wood, but on the right it looks like bark inclusion (or perhaps dead wood that has rotted). Despite the fragility, crack willow frequently gets quite large around here, but pretty much all end in mechanical failure rather senescence.

It was two or three minutes after sunset, and the light was like this. No time to get the tripod, so needed to shoot wide open and chose focus. The reflection of the trees worked best, but one's eye must be comfortable with the out-of-focus leaves on the surface and the not-quite sharp leaves and rocks in the bed of the pond.

The woman on the right was, I think, taking stills. Background on all this: I was staffing a booth at "The Things Conference", a trade show on IoT. To keep myself interested, I'd pull out my camera from time to time. It's old (1959), completely mechanical, and has a certain presence; it started conversations.
