“They should call these Frosted Crack Fancies! Wow the cream, the texture, smaller is better, this just melt in your mouth, it’s an absolute taste sensation a mosaic of flavour! I’m seeing colours I’ve never seen before! Can I give it 5.1?”

The mince pie taste test continues with Sainsbury’s Taste the Difference. As usually the disclaimer that I am judging these as a civilian would, not as an employee of Sainsbury’s. (Aya was already aghast at my non corporate loyalty that I buy my lunch from Tesco 🤣). 🧵

It’s the moment you’ve all (or at least just my cousin Carina) have been waiting for. The 2025 mince pie reviews.

Last year they were a solid front runner so we start again with Co-Op Luxury Mince Pies

…We were expecting ripper in the fog vibes but instead it opens in Tibet, features a lot of botany and when it isn’t dealing with the main characters descent into werewolfery spends a lot of time on a will they / won’t they affair to the gin soaked landladies who literally beat each other up!

… The directors and producers figured no one would really care about the discontinuity with Wolf Man being contemporary and Frankenstein being nineteen century Eastern Europe leading to a very odd mixed setting. Bela Lugosi rather than Boris Karloff plays the monster this time round.

Edgar Allen Poe (1909) - Again unless you’re a silent film aficionado you can skip this five minute short. Edgar Allen Poe [sic] inspired by a vision of a raven tires to sell a poem so he can raise the money to care for his sick wife
October 31, 2025 at 10:41 PM
The Wolf Man (1942) - The Werwolf movie codifier. Lon Chaney is suitably charismatic as the hapless gentleman who is bitten by a werewolf on a dark night and struggles not to give in to the beast within.

…We get a very intense depiction of a disintegrating relationship which initially maintains a level of ambiguity as to his wife’s mental state. But spoilers turns out there’s a monster. In my view the film is zipping along nicely but then suddenly turns very nasty and goes completely off the rails.
October 31, 2025 at 10:38 PM
The Infernal Cauldron (1903) - Unless (like us) you’ve an interest in silent cinema you might went to give this one a miss. At only three mins long and tinted in reds and blues, this is a very simple tale of devils throwing human victims to the flames.
October 31, 2025 at 10:36 PM
…There was a definite (and deliberate) Candyman vibe to this movie set in a rundown abandoned housing estate in the Parisian suburbs. All good horror shines a light on our worst excesses and this film explores casual racism, violence against women and disaffected youth.
October 31, 2025 at 10:35 PM
Monster Island (2024) - A tribute to The Creature from the Black Lagoon sees a Japanese conscientious objector and an American soldier marooned on a Pacific island where sea creatures are stalking the survivors of a sinking warship.
October 31, 2025 at 10:33 PM
Dracula (1958) - The Hammer Horror classic with Christopher Lee as Dracula and Peter Cushing as Van Helsing takes a very loose adaptation of Stokers original text, transplants the story to Germany but capture the essence. Lee is suitably mesmerising, though by all accounts he hated the role.
October 31, 2025 at 10:32 PM
The White Reindeer (1952) - A Finnish film that might as well be described as featuring a Werereindeer antagonist. When a love potion goes terrible wrong a lonely women is cursed to transform into vengeful white reindeer.

…Interestingly the version we watched didn’t subtitle the Italian characters and we thought that was so we shared Jones’s frustration and isolation. But turns out Cultplex had someone played a subtitleless version by mistake as we found out at the subsequent Q&A with the director!

…I want and support platforming and championing queer voices so in that sense I recommend it, but this tale of Australian drag queen vampires who are ethical in the sense they restrict their feeding to neo Nazis, bullies and homophobes is a bitty frustrating watch.

…Set in a dystopian near future where people trade real memories on the black market, the foppish Ralph Fiennes character gets drawn into a murder mystery that is linked to whoever is making combined snuff/rape memories...

As it was 2021 and the pandemic was still raging we had a very small gathering to celebrate my birthday / Halloween and to watch episode 1 of Flux. Our friends Aya and David joined us, dressed as a Weeping Angel and Rose Tyler respectively!
