Would like to point out there's a section in the EO issued yesterday that might outright bar trans people from obtaining federal research grants.

Spotted a cool rock on Mars on Wednesday

Had a wonderful time at the orchid exhibition last night! Super vibrant colors everywhere

Interested in elemental sulfur on Mars? Check out my #LPSC2025 poster this evening, where I look at the deposit from scales small to big! I am not actually in person, but with the help of my friend Carlos Gary-Bicas, I'm hoping to have a virtual presence! Stop by and say hi if you get a chance!

The new coronagraph on GOES-19 is pretty neat! The Earth pops in to say hi daily for a couple months around the equinoxes. Here's a partial eclipse from 615 GMT this morning with the Sun peeking over the Antarctic. The 100 km airglow shell, a few South American cities and fishing fleets are visible.

In case you have Wizard Morality and would like to make a bunch of copies to leave laying around somewhere, here are the zine pages to print on 8x11 stock. Print two-sided, cut in half horizontally at middle, stack and staple.

It scares me a little to share this, because I think publicly connecting myself to it paints a clear target on my back. But the current admin is taking a clear trans eliminationist position, so I think that target is already there. I just hope that this connects with someone.

This pamphlet is already getting out of date. Last week's executive orders attempt to nationalize many of the state level anti-trans laws. As of Friday, it is illegal for me to use the bathroom in a Federal facility.
February 4, 2025 at 8:08 PM
I wrote this ahead of LSPC in 2024, partly from seeing well-meaning people make some hurtful mistakes, partly from seeing colleagues not grasp the exclusionary nature of anti-trans laws being passed, and partly frustration that the conference continued in TX, one of the states pushing them hardest.
February 4, 2025 at 8:08 PM
Seems the trans rights zine I wrote to hand out at conferences is no longer being mirrored by LPI, so I'll distribute it here instead. I really want to emphasize that while I *think* the explainer section summarizes the most widely-used framework of transness, it is just one among many with value.

Ooh, a nice set of images came down from Curiosity's ChemCam Remote MicroImager (RMI) this morning. I've processed a mosaic from the public raw images. We were looking at Grant Lake, a small crater that's a couple hundred meters from the rover. This is about as close a look as we'll get!

This law comes from Tumblr/Wordpress CEO Matt Mullenweg, who in the midst of death threats directed towards tumblr's trans users, reported this post from a trans woman to the FBI as a bomb threat, used site records to find a twitter acct tied to her, and began a harassment brigade against her there.

Every time I read shit like this, I just feel sick about what's coming. I know despair is the intended effect, but knowing that doesn't make it any less miserable.

MAHLI's cal target over the course of Curiosity's mission. This is a regular MAHLI observation taken about four times a year (~150-200 sols). The lighting reflects different times of day and amounts of dust in the air. It's neat to see how much the terrain has changed over the years!

Jupiter Viewer appears to be using an out-of-date orbit for Juno, but inclined to say this is Amalthea. Metis and Thebe may be visible in this sequence as well, but they are so much smaller I do not think they will be obvious. Adrastea is probably too faint.

Spent the evening at the botanical garden's winter light show. Nice light display, a little kitsch-y, but I'm a sucker for lantern strings.

A neat ChemCam RMI observation from Sol 4370 (November 21, 2024). What could it be? It's an odd feature that's too far away to drive over to, so we needed to point ChemCam's telescope at it to get a closer look.

Wednesday was a day where I was really struggling to maintain hope, but seeing images that I helped plan come down this morning remind me why it's worth gritting onwards. These are self-processed public raws of the MAHLI targets Buttermilk and Lee Vining, respectively.

Ooh, we arrived at really similar colorizations of this dataset! Makes me a little more confident in my process!

Today's giving me a lot of Rosetta memories... It's hard to believe it's been a full decade since that incredible mission. Even harder to believe I can still remember how to spell Churyumov-Gerasimenko without having to looking it up to double check!
