Which I'm sure also have sizable female fanbases. Of course it's just an excuse to willfully misgender, but it's such a lazy and vapid excuse.

"Only guys play this game" is the most reductive reasoning I've ever heard. And if it's for the game I'm thinking it is, I know way more women who play it then most other games I know.
