Kraggan scanned the plants growing by the riverside as they trudged through the soft reddish mud, looking with a practiced eye for anything Baldrik had mentioned. She knelt to pick some leaves from a lady’s mantle bush, her tiny fingers plucking them carefully from the hardy perennial. Her dwingrandmother (what humans would call a great great great grandmother) Kriftinne had spent many years walking with her through the vast, ancient forest of the Eld, slowly teaching her the names and shapes of every plant and animal that dwelt therein. Kraggan thought now of Kriftinne as the felt the leaves between her fingers, remembering the venerable woman’s soft, warm hands, like wrinkled old leather, cupping her own to show her some new berry or seedling. She tucked the leaves into the pouch on her belt, and followed the others.
