Half square triangles (HSTs) can be created using numerous techniques, each varying in accuracy and bias seam management. Some methods generate HST units with substantial bias seams, while others minimise them. In today's tutorial, I’m excited to share one of my favorite techniques for efficiently producing HSTs, especially when I’m making a large number for a quilt project. Let’s dive in!

This is an experimental block I created using the 4-at-a-time technique to produce four half-square triangles, using ten fabric strips for one of the squares. You can easily adapt this technique to use a different number of strips. It's an enjoyable and creative process! How I made this block This tutorial creates four Half-Square Triangles (HSTs) that can be arranged in various configurations to form unique blocks.

This technique is one of my favorites, and I’m super excited to share it again—I even wrote a book about it! At its heart, this technique is all about tapping into your creativity and having a little fun with exploration. Asking “what if?” really kicks your imagination into gear and helps you get out of your usual thinking patterns.

I made this video tutorial to show how easy it is to make flange binding and to finish the quilt for my book tour QAL. The fabric requirements for the binding are listed on page 23 of my book, Turnabout Patchwork. Simple quilts with a twist. You can, of course, make the binding the traditional way, but if you’d like to try something a bit different, faux piping(also called a flange) adds a lovely finishing touch to any quilt.

Welcome to Week 3 of the Hearts in Bloom Quilt Along! 🌟 Our quilts are already blooming with hearts, and this week it’s time to add a little sparkle with the Sawtooth Star block. This classic design brings a crisp, structured look to balance the softer heart shapes we’ve made so far. Traditionally, the Sawtooth Star is pieced with flying geese, but in this version, we’re keeping things simple with half-square triangles.

I love star blocks, so this one had to be part of my collection! In today’s video, I’ll show you how to make it using foundation piecing. For small blocks like this, I find foundation piecing gives much more accurate results than traditional piecing. I used regular copy paper for my foundations, though you might find it a bit thick.
