Sage stood in the comms center of the space station, staring up at the main viewscreen and feeling more unprepared than they had since their very first assignment. It had been almost fifty years since then. They had, perhaps somewhat regrettably for their own mental health, become as much of a household name as a career ambassador was ever likely to for their negotiations during the resources conflicts on Mars. They didn't like being that well known, precisely, but it was rare these days that they felt like they didn't have a leg to stand on, that they didn't have some experience to fall back on. But all their experience was in dealing with humans. Nothing they'd ever learned would necessarily help with the actual, genuine aliens that hovered in orbit above Mars, practically within spitting distance of the space station. Sage had no idea what to do with real aliens. They could still hardly believe this was happening. But happening it was, and given their credentials and resume - and convenient proximity, when word had first arrived of this. . . event - they now found themself the soon-to-be official point of communication between humanity and their first visitors from beyond the solar system. They had no idea where to start.

I tend to work on several things at once, and I couldn't decide. :P

Both fanfic, both Highlander, as the fixations dictate.
Rain streaked the windshield as Duncan pulled down onto the quay, painting the city lights and dark water of the river in impressionist smears of color. He put the car in park and shut it off, staring out at those streaming colors for a minute, not in any particular mood to appreciate the spectacle. He just saw another damp, dreary day, capping off a damp, dreary week, slogging on toward the centerpoint of one more difficult, exhausting year. The clattering sound of metal on metal sounded flatly through the dusk, and the lit end of a cigarette glowed faintly in the deep shadows under the bleachers. The figure standing there could only shake his head in resigned disgust, watching the two shapes move back and forth across the grass of the woods-bracketed park, the dying light flashing dully off the weapons in their hands. This was a public place. Out of the way, sure, and the nearest residences were a good distance away, but this was still a park. Kids came here. And these two with their damn swords and their damn Game apparently saw no problem with that.
