To say that The Black Griffin ooozes cool characters and world-building from every pore is an understatement. Damn, I need to go re-read this now. Haha, I've sold myself!

If you've read this far, thanks for giving me a chance to rant about some of my favorite reads. I hope you give one a try!

So, in an effort to not just recommend Mercedes Lackey's entire back list manually one book at a time, I'll end with this. The Black Griffin.

The timeline starts here and it was the first book I'd ever read that had a GRIFFIN as a main POV character. That's right!

The Black Gryphon (Mage Wars Book 1)
It is an age when Valdemar is yet unfounded, its organization of Heralds yet unformed, and magic is still a wild and uncontrolled force. Skandranon Rashkae is perhaps the finest specimen of his race, ...

I could could go on for forever, but I'm going to drop a few more starting points instead. Like The Mage Wind Trilogy

I loved this for its deep-dive into the technical magic of the world, great battles, smoking-hot romance, and its incredibly brutal villain.

Winds of Fate (Mage Winds Book 1)
High magic had been lost to Valdemar centuries ago when the lost Herald-Mage gave his life to save the kingdom from destruction by dark sorceries. Yet now the realm is at risk again. And Elspeth—Heral...

And can I pause a moment to praise the queer representation in these books? There's gay characters ranging from side characters to historical figures to brilliant mage bishounen on over to main characters with full plot lines and romances.

There was a gay griffon even. I think. Maybe.

Seriously, you can dive into a multi-series setting that has a plot spanning 3000 years over like 30+ books. No joke. It makes the MCU look like a kiddie pool.

They all develop the same magic system, which is one of the best ever, have great battles, and loads of romantic entanglements.

By the Sword features a unique magical system, detailed military tactics involving mercenary companies in a fantasy world, magical horses, destined swords, and a great romance coming for in the second-half.

And if you like it, there might be a few...just a few ;) books in that same world.

The story follows the life of Kerowyn, an underappreciated noble's daughter who loses her family, starts to go on the hero's journey, but is then trained to be a mercenary by her amazingly cool grandmother and proceeds to be a career professional ass-kicker with a magical sword.

By the Sword by Mercedes Lackey is a once-a-year re-read for me and I've re-bought it 3 times in hardback because I keep wearing it out.

It's also the book that started me into liking books with legit Romantic sub-plots and strong heroines.

Stardew Valley

I lament that I can't play it against for the first time.
