Book 106: The Cornish Christmas Pantomime Murder by Fiona Leitch.

It's a bit early in the season for me, but this was a fun Christmas read 📚 🎄
November 25, 2025 at 5:39 PM
Book 105: The Cornish Castle Murder by Fiona Leitch.

Bit of Cornish cosy crime on audiobook to get me through the drive to this week's writing retreat in Cornwall.
November 21, 2025 at 1:28 PM
Book 104: Turbine 34 by Katharine Clements.

Atmospheric reading material on my Cornish writing retreat 🧡
November 18, 2025 at 10:29 AM
Book 103: Tools for Surviving a Storm by Nadia Henderson.

Lyrical book of short stories full of themes of nature, womanhood and otherworldliness.
November 18, 2025 at 10:21 AM
Book 102: These are the Words by Nikita Gill.

Arrived in Cornwall on a mini writing retreat and already finished my first book.
November 16, 2025 at 9:50 PM
Book 101: Careless People by Sarah Wynn-Williams.

This memoir of life working at Facebook was quite the ride, featuring all kinds of hair-raising anecdotes about encounters with world leaders and horrific toxic workplace stories.
November 16, 2025 at 6:28 PM
Book 100: Small Pleasures by Clare Chambers.

100 books! 🥳 And this one broke me a little bit with that ending 💔 😭
November 13, 2025 at 9:43 AM
Book 99: The Rest of Our Lives by Ben Markovits.

A kind of campus novel road trip mash up, which makes for a pretty engaging read, even if it is a bit navel gazey. Haven't managed to read the full Booker shortlist, but my preferences so far were definitely from the longlist.

November's writing workshop is all about writing stories featuring alternate lives.

📆 Wednesday 26 November, 7pm

We'll explore some examples, look at the structures the writers use and think about how to build the rules of your shifting story worlds.

Book 98: Misinterpretation by Ledia Xhoga.

Another Booker longlistee, about a woman working as an Albanian translator in New York and the cast of characters who bring drama to her life.
November 5, 2025 at 10:32 PM
Book 97: I cannot be good until you say it by Sanah Ahsan.

A rich collection of poetry, bought after the author pulled out of the Polari Prize longlist.
November 1, 2025 at 11:27 PM
Book 96: Short Circuit: A Guide to the Art of the Short Story, edited by Vanessa Gebbie.

Been reading a lot of short stories lately and reflecting on what makes them linger in the memory.
October 30, 2025 at 11:32 PM
Book 95: The Door to Door Poet by Rowan McCabe.

A social commentary on the UK by a North East poet who spent a year knocking on doors and writing poems for the people he met. I followed this project for a while and have seen the spoken word version, so it's great to see this in print.
October 26, 2025 at 11:01 PM
Book 94: The Long Shoe by Bob Mortimer.

Didn't realise this was going to be a standalone book not featuring the characters from Bob's previous books. It was a very random mash up of imagery, but he does write a soft lad very well 🙃
October 22, 2025 at 8:57 AM
Book 93: The South by Tash Aw.

Continuing my Booker readthrough, which seems to be mostly focused on the longlist. Took a little while to get into this one, but it's a beautiful novel.
October 13, 2025 at 9:56 PM
Book 92: One Boat by Jonathan Buckley.

Continuing my read through of the Booker longlist...
October 9, 2025 at 8:35 PM
👻👻 Getting in the spooky season mood? I'm running an online writing workshop focused on the ghost story this month! 👻👻

October 7, 2025 at 1:02 PM
Book 91: Deadline by Steph McGovern.

Picked this up at an author event during the Crossing the Tees Festival, intrigued to learn that a lot of the story is set in the North of England. It's always amazing to read a book written in a proper northern voice.
October 5, 2025 at 8:25 PM
Book 90: Audition by Katie Kitamura.

The unspooling of family life, in theatrical fashion.
September 28, 2025 at 10:39 PM
Book 89: Playing Big by Tara Mohr.

Aimed at women, this is a really great guide for addressing self doubt and the unconscious desire to stay small. Follow your dreams, ladies! 💪
September 28, 2025 at 3:27 PM
Book 88: Stone & Sky by Ben Aaronovitch.

Finishing off a couple of books, including the latest Rivers of London, which sees Peter & family (magical & otherwise) head to Aberdeen to investigate evidence of a mysterious large cat, leading to a supernatural intrigue offshore with a local oil company 🐙
September 28, 2025 at 3:25 PM
Lovely evening in Newcastle at an event for author @joannapocock.bsky.social and her book Greyhound.

A really interesting, thoughtful conversation on travel, community and America. Can't wait to read the book!
September 23, 2025 at 8:51 PM
Book 87: Seascraper by Benjamin Wood.

This is a gorgeous little book about a young man working a tough job by the sea, when an encounter with a stranger makes him reassess his life. Such a shame this didn't make the Booker shortlist.
September 23, 2025 at 8:48 PM
