A few weeks ago in the Greenville, MS public library’s exhibit about the town’s literary roots. I’d never seen a memorial to teachers of writers and wish we had more celebrations of teachers in our public memory.

Exceptional Teaching "Carrie Stern really began it. It was her influence on Will Percy," Shelby Foote has said. She also taught David L. Cohn and Ben Wasson. All three have written tributes to her. She died in 1920, but the tradition of fine teaching has continued and is credited by today's writers. In 1982 when authors were asked what Greenville influences affected their writing, teachers were frequently named. While only those teachers specifically cited are listed here, every teacher can share in the pride that accompanies achievement and recognition. The authors in this exhibit named the following teachers: Lester Acree Mary Keady Herman Solomon E. E. Bass Thyrza McCollum Caroline Stern Pat De Jean Lillian McLaughlin Claude Stuart Mary Gamble Lorraine Shell Nell Thomas Louise E. Hawkins Mary Barwick Shields Jimaree A. Ward "From the time I was in elementary school, I always knew it was not only respectable to be a writer, but honorable, desirable. The literary tradition was strong. Who our next writer would be was always pondered. Teachers were on the lookout. The effect of this is invaluable." Beverly Lowry
