"Tree of Tenere”
The most isolated tree on earth, growing in the Tenere Desert, was knocked down by a truck in 1973.
Later, an artificial tree was erected here as a landmark.
I hope to visit again someday when Niger is at peace.

Do you know what “Tenere” means?
It means “desert” in Tamashek (language of Tuareg).
Within the Sahara Desert, the desert area with many sand dunes in Niger is called the “Tenere Desert”. This means something like the desert of the desert.
And Ténéré has another meaning.
It is a “nostalgia’.

the second is strong like love,
and the third is sweet as death.

While doing fieldwork for cultural anthropology in the Sahara Desert, I came down with high malaria fever. At that time, a Tuareg boy nursed me while studying.
