It reminds me a lot of the "pivot to video" push a decade ago where a lot of print sites laid off writing staff to prioritize unpopular video content over false data suggesting people preferred it, except this is on a much larger scale. The Emperor's New Clothesness of it all is draining.

I think rateyourmusic has the best culture around rating, its users don't commonly rate in the extremes and the vast majority of albums are in the 2.50 to 3.50 range (out of 5). The site also has weighting mechanics that prevent review bombing from new accounts.
