Some untold time later, Viktor wakes to a soft sound from the doorway. Jayce remains sound asleep beside him, having managed to somehow loop an arm around Viktor’s thigh. When he attempts to shift away, Jayce tightens his grip, eliciting a wince from Viktor. By now, the limb has gone numb and stiff, but he stays put, trapped by his sleeping partner’s need and affection. This makes realising who is at the door all the more mortifying. "Mrs. Talis."

What might it mean to thrive? To no longer have to fight for the right to exist? Viktor’s hand closes around the clasp, feeling the cold metal of the topmost gear leaving an impression in his palm like a secret promise. He straightens against the wall, his crutch clicking as he adjusts his weight. “Shall we continue?” chapter excerpt Chapter 33: In Glorious Evolution The meeting place Viktor has chosen sits at the farthest point of the wharf, where conversations can dissolve into the ambient sounds of lapping water and distant machinery. Few venture this far out; the fragility of the structure discourages casual traffic. Crates of varying sizes cluster at the edge, remnants of shipments long since processed and forgotten. He shifts, redistributing his weight to ease the sharp ache building in his hip from sitting on one such crate. As a chair, it leaves much to be desired, but seeing that the trip down to the wharfs has rendered him near catatonic with fatigue, he’s grateful for any place to sit, even if it’s a rickety, barnacle-growing crate. Though the night is cool, it’s humid, and the gusts of air over the water make him draw the blanket around his shoulders (ridiculous though it is, Jayce insisted he take it) tighter around himself. Two silhouettes materialise from the fog—one striding with purpose, the second with a step so quick it is almost gleeful. Viktor glances from the approaching figures to the other side of the wharf, where the sounds of dock workers echo from further away. No sign of Ekko. Viktor leans his weight into his crutch and stands with a soft groan, ignoring the protest of his aching joints. Violet walks up to him first, her face pinched with apprehension. Jinx hovers behind her, electric blue eyes scanning the mist-shrouded dock as if expecting an ambush. “Good evening,” Viktor greets, too tired to properly assuage their fears. They exchange a glance—Violet's questioning, Jinx's unreadable—a silent negotiation forged through blood, betrayal, and tentative reconciliation. Violet jerks her chin, the motion seeming to act half as a permissive nod and half as a gesture towards Viktor. When Jinx hands over the shimmer, there’s a peculiar care in the action that doesn’t match her usual frenetic movements. Her fingers curl around the vial protectively before releasing it, as if its contents represent something beyond mere chemical value. “One count of your-bad-decisions-in-a-vial, as requested,” she announces, but beneath the performative nonchalance, something flickers—a shadow crossing her face too quickly to name. “Vi said you’re trying to do some kind of doctor shit.” Viktor accepts the shimmer, pausing to glance between the two sisters. He supposes it’s only fair Jinx know what she’s getting involved in. “In a manner of speaking,” he answers, tucking the vial away without looking at it. “If our theory is correct, properly refined shimmer could be the key to accessing incredible healing power.” “To fix problems like yours?” Her eyes, bright in a way that makes him think of beacons, fix upon his face with unnerving clarity. He briefly wonders which ‘problem’ of his she’s referring to. He shrugs. “Among others.” The chaotic energy that typically radiates from her becomes sharp, and Viktor feels it like a focused beam. She studies him, head tilted like a predator assessing prey, before stepping back with a decisive nod. “Good enough. For now.” The last words carry a subtle warning—her cooperation has terms, conditions unspoken, perhaps not even understood, but certainly acknowledged. Viktor turns too quickly, balance wavering as his crutch slips on the damp wood. Ekko stands at the far end of the dock, silhouetted against the grey haze of the city. His stance is coiled as if to make himself impervious, hood pulled low over his face. Then, Ekko sees Jinx. The temperature seems to plummet by several degrees. The wharf no longer feels like neutral ground but a battlefield with unstable alliances—all it would take is a word, a movement, a spark, even in this dampness. “What is she doing here?” His words cut across the distance, salt-bitten and sharp like a gust at sea. Ekko, wary to begin with as always, was a hard sell when it came to the necessity of using shimmer. Ekko’s initial reaction—plants overturned, notes scattered like startled birds taking flight, Thomas looking as if he might leap the barrier like a terrified jackrabbit—had been predictable, even manageable. But this, the venom in his voice at the sight of Jinx, Viktor has failed to account for. Violet’s shoulders square, her body angling to position herself between her sister and Ekko. Jinx goes unnaturally still, her frantic air condensed into something harder, more dangerous. “I have a request that requires your collaboration,” Viktor says into the charged silence, each word measured. “I thought it most efficient to address you all at once.” He watches the calculation behind Ekko’s eyes, the furious recalibration as his hands clench into fists, tension rippling up his forearms. His jaw locks, the muscle there twitching beneath skin that’s gone tight with restraint. This is not a very auspicious start to the meeting.

To hope is to make room for devastation. “You must promise me…” Viktor purses his lips in contemplation. Ch. 26 of Lies we tell ourselves is up! Chapter teaser: "Come back to my place?" The offer is gentle, searching. "Whatever for, Jayce?" Viktor’s tone lacks its usual sharpness, replaced with genuine curiosity and a hint of something Jayce has never heard before. He hesitates, wondering if that note is something like an insinuation—but, no, it couldn't possibly be. "Been ages since we shared a drink, talked, and… Feels overdue. Especially after all… this." chapter excerpt Chapter 26: Hypocrites and Hypolithons The lab buzzes with an urgent energy as Ekko sits across from them, arms tucked around himself. The ragged state of his olive green jacket looks out of place against the pristine gleam of their workstations, but he wears it like armour. The defiance that sometimes makes itself apparent in Viktor’s personality is on full display in Ekko. It reminds Jayce of Vi in ways that make their shared upbringing in the Undercity clear. “I was thinking about what you said about the arcane,” Ekko says, flicking a stark white dread from his eyes as he gestures to the collection of plant trial notes Sky accumulated for him. “See here, your trials indicate the burning of resources—too fast, and too little. It’s what I’m seeing with my tree. But you said something like that shouldn’t be possible, because this land is magically scarce, right?” He directs his words to Viktor, as he has most of the afternoon. Jayce tries not to be offended by that and blames their frantic introduction. Viktor nods in response. “Yes, it is as I was saying the day we met. I theorise that proximity plays a role in this kind of deterioration. For us, the Hexcore. For you, something… different.” Jayce watches Ekko spread several sketches of his tree’s deterioration across the table. The leaves show peculiar decay patterns—not the usual browning from drought or disease, but an almost crystalline brittleness at the edges. “These patterns,” Viktor leans forward, tracing the edge of one leaf illustration with a finger, “they mirror the accelerated senescence we observe in our trials when the arcane energy is improperly channelled.” Jayce looks between the two in front of him, then down at the sketches again. “V—could this be related to—” he begins, attracting Viktor’s rapt attention. Viktor nods, eyes lighting with the spark of scientific discovery despite his exhaustion. “Yes, I was thinking the same.” “You two care to clue me in?” Ekko questions, sounding less annoyed than he does curious.

Illness is not a lover kept, but a growing shadow, spreading further and further until isolation is all he knows. “ When Viktor looks up, it is to meet the forlorn concern in Jayce’s eyes with threadbare honesty. “I am tired.” “Let me.” Jayce’s request is a revelation. Viktor knows this is the end of his twisted relationship with his illness and the nascence of something much more complicated. It begins as a flutter, delicate as moth wings against his ribcage, frantic wing beats under his sternum. “Do you trust me?” That sensation grows in his chest, threading between his ribs—a warmth that borders on ache, a fullness too vast to cage behind ribs and reason. “Of course I do.” “Then let me carry this with you, Viktor. Please.”

"You got stabbed by a child," Vi hisses in admonishment. He gives a small shrug, too exhausted to explain. As adrenaline ebbs, the pain in his side grows sharper and harder to bear. The reality seems unbelievable. The boy appeared so sad, so mistreated; Jayce's empathy flowed naturally. It was easy to imagine him as a victim of circumstance who would see Jayce for what he was: a well-intentioned stranger here to help. Which, of course, explained why he hadn't seen it coming. Too trusting by half, always assuming the world divided neatly into good and bad, those distinctions clear and simple. Youth didn't mean the ragged boy hadn't learnt that violence could be both a way to survive and a thing you were a victim of—or that men who smiled and seemed kind couldn't be more dangerous.

The world lurches with another spasm of coughing, copper flooding his tongue. Viktor's heart hammers against his ribs as dizziness sweeps over him. He reaches for an iron railing but misses, his crutch slipping on slick cobblestones. His shoulder connects with someone solid, and hands shove him away with unexpected force, sending him reeling backward, crutch clattering away into the crowd. Impact with the ground knocks what little air remains from his lungs. Black spots dance across his vision as he fights for breath in desperate gasps. The sensation transports him briefly—not to childhood falls while chasing clockwork toys in moments of forgotten limitation, but to his collapse in the factory last year. He tries to focus on the cobblestones beneath him as he rolls onto his side with a groan. They’re cold and wet against his palms, grit embedding into his skin as he struggles to right himself. Someone nearby swears—the person he crashed into, he thinks, though the voices around him have begun to sound peculiarly distant and hollow. “Yeah, I’m not falling for your bull—” The voice addresses him with an air that assumes Viktor will fall into line. Then, “—shiiiiitt. Yeah, okay—man, you look like absolute shit.”

Jayce doesn’t know what to say other than, “I came to see her about Viktor.” Any solace he can think to offer wouldn’t make much difference, never mind the fact that he hasn’t even once considered what that kind of unjust imprisonment must do to a person. All he can offer is his own honesty for hers. “Big surprise, pretty boy. All you talk about lately is him.” His face heats at that. She’s not wrong, but he isn’t sure what else to do when the man you love is dying and you may have the only avenue that can save him. “Plus, you have that look.” She squints over at him, fluttering fingers at his face. He bats her hand away, and she smirks, tucking it into her pockets instead. “What look?” he asks incredulously. “I don’t know, sad? Pathetic? Like someone just punched you in the kidney every time you say his name.” She finally shrugs herself off the wall, marching over towards the iron gate to leave him with nothing but the view of her broad back. “Why does every conversation with you involve me getting punched?”

“The consequences—” Viktor starts, but Sky cuts him off. “Are ours to face, if it comes to it.” She’s gentle, but firm, and Thomas nods his assent alongside her, his hand on her shoulder. “Just like they’re yours,” he adds. “Just like they’re Jayce’s.” Again, the realisation that these young, brilliant minds are applying themselves for his benefit. It’s his life they’re fighting for, even if, as Thomas pointed out, they ultimately may be able to save many more. In this moment, it would be a lie to say that they aren’t all acutely aware of the clock solemnly counting down the months over their heads. Despite his warnings of consequences, the worst outcome would mean—well, his death. He’s never had to concern himself with the repercussions, but now… Viktor watches them turn back to their work with renewed focus, anxiety tangling with a small kernel of pride in his chest. Across the room, Jayce stirs slightly in his sleep, the blanket slipping from his shoulder. Viktor moves to adjust it, his fingertips brushing against the skin of the man’s shoulder. His touch lingers—just fleeting seconds—longer than necessary.

I will go to him,” Viktor states with no uncertainty. Jayce blinks, shock rippling through him. “But, V… your breathing… Is that really the best?” Jayce tries, gentling his voice even as his mind floods with horrific visions—Viktor alone in some filthy alley, blood streaming down his face as merciless coughs wrack his frame, help impossibly distant. “Is venturing into the Undercity to make contact with a person I am less than pleased to encounter again to obtain a highly dangerous and illegal drug… wise?”

His strong jaw is so tight that a muscle jumps at the corner where it meets his neck. “Are you having second thoughts?” WHis eyes snap open, but the alarm melts away when Jayce fixes him with the full intensity of his warm, honeyed gaze. “Not about saving your life,” he refutes, reaching his free hand to take Viktor’s own. “I know this is the best chance we’ve got. But that doesn’t mean it doesn’t terrify me.” “Something like this should be a bit terrifying.”

Viktor’s time is really coming to an end. Inside, he is screaming. The pain of what Viktor dying would mean almost brings him to his knees. I love him, he thinks with hopeless certainty. I’m not ready to bury him yet. But it’s not in his nature to give up—there must be a road they can pursue, a solution they haven’t found yet. This is not the time to fall apart. Viktor will need him in the coming days, now more than ever. So he shuts away those feelings as deeply as he can, takes a steadying breath, and gives what he hopes is a composed expression to the doctor. “Thank you, Dr. Granet. I’ll be heading home—gods know I need it.” Jayce makes a deliberate spectacle of looking down at the bloody wreck of his lab coat, still hanging half-unbuttoned. He needs a shower, food, and a proper change of clothes—at the very least—before he returns. “If he wakes up and tries to start moving around, don’t be afraid to sedate him,” he manages with a thin sort of humour. The doctor does him a good turn by huffing out a soft laugh in return and bidding him farewell. In a true feat of fortitude, Jayce makes it all the way to the hospital elevator before the tears come.

He holds back the words that almost lash out, ‘How would you know?’, recognising that perhaps, in his recent weeks of temperamental health, he has been harsher than he’s intended, quicker to anger, and harder to calm. He breathes a long sigh, his attention falling again to their joined hands. Whilst he’s noted, repeatedly, that Jayce has not let go— neither has he. He turns his hand, almost experimentally, within the cocoon of Jayce’s palm, fingers curling in the cavern of it. “What happened?” He doesn't look up when he asks the question; instead, he traces the heart line of Jayce’s hand with the tip of his index finger. “We—well, we were arguing,” Jayce grates out, words resistant, “and you—” “No,” Viktor interjects with a shake of his head. “Not that. Tell me what you were doing with the Hexcore. And... everything that came before.” Jayce seems hesitant to speak, but Viktor fixes him with a steady look. “Would you... believe me if I said I was trying to protect you?”

Viktor still doesn’t seem capable of looking at Jayce as he confirms this fact. He drags in ragged breaths as he stands there, processing, a slight sway to his frame. “After everything, Jayce, everything you took from me. You would take this too,” he spits out in a voice that’s broken with cold rage. “I—what? Viktor, no,” he begins, stepping towards him only to have Viktor turn back and throw his old notebook to the floor. It lands between them with a resounding *thwack*, lying there like an issued challenge. “Take it, then. Since there is nothing of mine apparently that does not belong to you—my work, the years of my life I spent here, my—” He breaks off to cough, the force of it violent now, and Jayce longs to go to him but knows proximity will only make this worse. Instead, he holds his hands out, palms up in appeasement, and wills himself to be calm. “If you would just let me speak, I swear I can explain.”

Ch. 15 of Lies we tell ourselves is up! chapter teaser Jayce tips his head back and closes his eyes; Viktor can trace the ridge of his Adam’s apple in the cool lights of the lab. I bet he’d fall if I kissed him there. He turns away and ducks to cover his face so quickly that he almost slams it against the desk. As if that’s not embarrassing enough, Jayce immediately rights his chair and leans over to him. “Viktor?” “I’m fine,” he croaks, aware that he sounds a bit like he might be crying. “I’m just—” “Jayce, stop.” The air sounds loud again. Viktor is fighting against himself for protection, trying to wrestle his thoughts back from the dangerous territory of soft memories, of a tender touch on his knee, of Jayce’s face lit in the moonlight. You can’t trust him again. Every time he thinks he’s fortified himself against these feelings, Jayce does something devastating, like calling this ‘our lab’ and referring to ‘our assistants’, and Viktor finds himself yielding another centimetre of the distance he’d built between them over the last two years. And you certainly can’t want that.

Desperation led him astray before, but this time feels different—has to be different. He'd been so worn down before, so afraid of the ways he could feel Viktor slipping through his fingers. He had been oblivious to the unkind realities of Viktor’s movements in the world. Upon encountering the man’s ailments, Jayce had chosen familiar remedies—but his ignorance had poisoned them. Ch 13 of lies we tell ourselves is up! Chapter teaser: "I miss you." Warmth blooms in Viktor’s chest, eliciting a sharp intake of breath. A waterfall follows—Viktor flinches at the pain that inhale causes; Jayce reaches for him in alarm; the carriage comes to a halt; and Jayce nearly falls into Viktor’s lap. “I’m alright.” Viktor grabs Jayce’s forearm to both steady and assure him. The contact sends a wave of warmth through him, dangerous in its familiarity and boldness. He swallows. “Besides, this is my stop.” He opens the carriage door to the balmy summer, hoping the night air will dispel this thing between them. “Oh.” Jayce doesn’t move his hand from Viktor’s knee. His face is tilted up, features softly resolving in moonlight and shadow on his skin, full lips parted just so. Viktor is caught between the urge to close this distance and the equally powerful need to flee.

Ch. 12 of Lies we tell ourselves is up! Chapter teaser: “We must solve this, Jayce.” His voice is soft; it sounds like a plea. “I know.” Jayce quiets long enough to study Viktor and the emotions appearing to war inside of him. He blinks when Viktor’s eyes flick back up to his face. “Do you, Jayce?” There is something in them he hasn’t seen in ages. He looks a touch mournful still, but there is something warmer there too. *Hope*, he realises. A hope in its infancy, imploring Jayce to help him reach this possibility. Viktor’s finger lifts to track along the desk, moving across the surface in an idle pattern. “Do you know what this breakthrough could mean, not just in the wrong hands, but the right ones?” As Viktor speaks, the motion of his finger brings his hand close to Jayce’s thigh before it pulls back again. The repetitive movement is aimless and idle, yet Jayce can’t help but feel it as strangely sensual. Viktor’s own eyes follow the gesture without intent. He seems to try and work through a complicated series of internal arguments before speaking once more. “The Undercity is… not doing well.”

Chapter teaser “Time is valuable, Jayce, and there is never enough of it,” he reflected, hoping he sounded more thoughtful than solemn. “There are plenty of people who suffer just like me, more than me even. How can I justify stopping the work that could improve their lives for something as insubstantial as my own comfort?” There was more to say—about how so much had already been given to him, how he couldn’t fathom asking for more, but for now, this was sufficient.“I can survive this.” “Of course you can, V, but you don‘t have to.” His partner reached out to take the empty glass from Viktor’s hands, setting it down on the polished coffee table crammed next to the couch. “You wouldn’t ask anyone else to just survive,” Jayce implored. “You helped me see what our work could do for people, and you’re just as worthy of relief as anyone else. Yes, time is valuable, but… so are you.”
