Question: what the hell is a Norwood VII?

HOLY FUCK

I could also be entirely wrong and misunderstanding what he’s saying too.
January 11, 2026 at 8:39 PM
I don’t like that they’re considering using it in that way, but I also think people have taken that statement and kind of ran in the wrong direction with it. Don’t get me wrong, he is NOT off the hook for this shit but it feels like people are hopping on the hate train too early.
January 11, 2026 at 8:38 PM
Is this from Swen saying that “if they use generated assets, it’ll be from stuff they own”? Cause I think that statement has confused people a bit.

I don’t take it as “we’re 100% using it”, I take it as “IF we use it, we’ll use our stuff”(which still doesn’t understand how GenAI works but eh)

Thanks for these articles, I’ll give em a read
January 11, 2026 at 8:18 PM
I do want to make it clear, I share a lot of your concerns but I also think that this whole situation is being misrepresented with some of these headlines and people on here and the other place don’t tend to read past the headlines sometimes. If you’re gonna be mad, be mad in the right direction.

I don’t know if Larian is necessarily going down the “we’re using this to replace artists” route, especially with their recent hiring of a large number of concept artists and their pivot from using GenAI for moodboards. I’m keeping a close fucking eye on them though, cause it’s a slippery slope.
January 11, 2026 at 8:15 PM
Oh I wholeheartedly agree. I think that it shouldn’t be used at all in creative fields, but things like classic ML algorithms have applications in game design. Please don’t get it twisted, me going through the AMA and posting this is NOT me supporting GenAI, it’s just more complicated than “AI Bad”
January 11, 2026 at 8:13 PM
I lean toward “AI = Bad” most of the time, but I also understand that there are use-cases for this tech beyond laziness and greed. They tend to be few and far between, but they exist. I’m just hoping we get to the point where we don’t have to wreck the environment/economy for it before long.
January 11, 2026 at 5:44 AM
AI as a tool is something that I’m iffy on, leaving towards outright disdain. Its use as a placeholder for, say, early access games that need early voice acting and can’t afford multiple full time VAs? Fine, that makes sense. Replacing artists and actors outright? Fuck no, get out of here.
January 11, 2026 at 5:40 AM
I agree that this is still an issue that should be addressed but I would much rather have “we’re trying to figure out where this fits into our workflow” over “we’re actively replacing real artists with this sub-par image generator.”

Still not great or ideal, but not nearly as bad as the latter.
January 11, 2026 at 5:38 AM
Exactly. I think AI definitely has its use cases, I just don’t necessarily believe it is to be used in the fields of creativity like game dev, music, art, etc. cause the whole point of those fields is human creativity which feels weird to outsource like that.

And the distinction between Machine Learning and GenAI needs to be FIRMLY DRAWN. If someone hears "We use AI for pathfinding" these days, they don't hear machine learning, they hear "we were lazy and used generative AI", which is not the same thing.
January 11, 2026 at 1:44 AM
Now, I'm not a game dev. I don't know the challenges that go into game dev. But I find Swen's statement of "we want to try and see if it's useful" to be reasonable because if there's "nothing work" that no one likes, that's the exact use case in which AI SHOULD be used.
January 11, 2026 at 1:44 AM
It makes sense to try and find use cases for a new technology, but I find that the blanket of "all kinds of AI are BAD and EVIL!" is what these AI companies want because it confuses us to a larger extent, like the difference between LLMs(GenAI) and traditional machine learning algorithms.
January 11, 2026 at 1:44 AM
I understand the outrage surrounding the usage of GenAI. I myself, as an artist, really despise it's usage in creative fields. However, your anger needs to be directed in the right way, at the people who are actively using AI to abuse creatives, workers, and the environment at large.
January 11, 2026 at 1:44 AM
As far as I can tell, Swen made only this rather large statement about AI. I do find the "we'll train it on our own data" to be a bit...contentious? but it still feels like they're trying to figure out if this technology will actually help them in development.
January 11, 2026 at 1:44 AM
Other companies would just flat out ignore the questions surrounding AI usage if they were "all-in" on it. Larian is trying to calm concerns surrounding how they ACTUALLY use it.

And again, the way they use it is closer to classic machine learning(again, to my untrained eye).
January 11, 2026 at 1:44 AM
To me, this feels like Larian has been misrepresented by people like Jacob Schrier in an attempt to maybe burn some of their goodwill. I don't have a way to necessarily prove that, but with how open the dialogue has been with Larian, it makes me a tad suspicious.
