A DOMESTIC

Success wasn’t you.
The cups moved on
to other shelves
to keep their sheen.

But failure suits,
boxed at the top
of the stairs,
among the crocks
your mother saved.

Back to therapy.

My shrink and I joke about what she could put on her business card, if she had one.

Because nothing in this life is new.

For when Mercury in retrograde is not to blame.

Emotional baggage unpacked. Hold only - no carry-ons.

Woke up to the news of Diane Keaton’s death. I’ll put on some coffee and Alan Parker’s Shoot the Moon. She’s on the screen for about 90 minutes in that, second only to Reds, which is a longer movie.

Haiku on Elliott Smith’s birthday

Barlight on her back,
she leaves like she always leaves -
before the chorus.

The song folds itself
like a note too sad to send.
It knows who it’s for.

Thirteen years ago, I went for a drink with “the poisoner of Iquitos” and missed an appointment. There was an unseemly fuss when I finally turned up two days later. I had sent a text but it finished halfway through a sentence.

I miss the jungle.

C’mon Brendan, we’re going down the Boxty. I’ll take a Teeling. A double.

The road is calling. Been writing about that abstraction for the past week. When it takes the definite article it is no more asphalt or geography than a dream or meditative state that one must enter into, not blast through.

Here’s home, between motels, for the latter half of the year.

I see this is doing the rounds again.

Hpësoj is the name of the finger-painting done by the CEO's five-year-old daughter in lingonberry preserve.

It means "refrigerator quality" and every IKEA employee has to hang a print of it in their kitchen.

Louisiana’s Act 612, drafted by Rep Jay Galle, grants civil immunity to drivers who hit people “illegally” in the street while fleeing. Passed with other anti-protest laws, it sends a brutal message: if you're marching or second-lining, you're fair game.

Scum

Oh Brian,

You wrote the soundtrack to America’s brief innocence.

Sad will never sound so sweet, or sweet so sad.

Thomas Fugate - fresh out of uni, still blinking from the sunlamp of adolescence - has been handed the keys to the US counter-extremism effort. A Heritage Foundation intern who once bagged groceries with both hands and now cradles the brain of homeland security like it’s a stress ball

Outsider folk. Michael Hurley. Backwoods bard. These 1964 recordings catch him in early bloom, before the world knew what to make of him. Songs drift like smoke - trancey, tender, laced with cosmic humour

Happy birthday, Natsuhiko Kyogoku. Do pick up @aokajiya.bsky.social’s translation of The Summer of the Ubume. He’s the reason English readers can even begin to appreciate Kyogoku without needing a PhD in classical Japanese literature

Yellow and green flames escape manhole at Texas Tech uni (see link) This is how they announce the selection of a new Ninja Turtle. This is Artemisia (“Arti”). Artemisia Gentileschi was a Baroque badass who painted violent revenge scenes, so she’d totally wield a kusarigama

Happy 103rd birthday, Jack Kerouac. I now pick up old paperbacks of his books, not to read again but to flick through like they’re photo albums; their best passages beaming cheesily up at me, their excited annotations fading. They may have had their day, but there’s still greatness in them
