Excerpt from "Pieces", a short story in Breakfast & Other Journeys We Take: Sharon and I divorced when he was just out of high school. I can't say it had anything to do with the Lego set piece, but I'm not ruling it out. I can't imagine what the judge would have said to a complaint like "Lost a piece to our son's first Lego set," but it was probably like "Send him to jail for the rest of his life." It would have been fitting I suppose.

"You could call for help," Banana offers. The first reasonable thing out of him in weeks. "But, for the lack of hands, the ability to talk at a frequency that humans can hear, and all that." Ah yes, that whole problem that humans can't hear fruit. Vegetables either. Or even plates and bowls. No, humans are wholly unable to hear anything. Waste of an intelligent species really.
